What It Is
The square knot — also called the reef knot — is older than most tools you own and is documented in continuous use across maritime, medical, and military contexts for thousands of years. That longevity is real and earned. The knot joins two ends of the same line into a closed loop, or ties together two pieces of roughly equal-diameter cordage, with a flat, symmetric profile that doesn’t bunch, roll, or dig into whatever it’s binding.
The symmetry that makes it useful is also what limits it. The square knot holds reliably under a steady load from a single direction. Under a shifting or side load it can capsize — flatten into a lasso configuration that releases with no warning. This is not a failure of execution. It is a structural property of the knot that cannot be corrected by tying it more carefully. The square knot is a binding knot, not a bend. It should be treated as one.

How to Tie It
- Hold one end in each hand.
- Cross the right end over the left end and pass it through — the same start as tying a shoelace.
- Now cross what is now on the right over what is on the left, and pass it through.
- Pull both ends away from the center to seat the knot.
- Verify: the two bights should lie parallel, with each end emerging alongside its own standing part. If one end runs through the other bight, a granny knot was tied instead — untie and start again.
When to Use It
Bundling arrows for transport or storage. Closing a bandage or first-aid wrap where the load is distributed evenly. Tying down a light tarp or rain cover where the load direction is stable. Closing a bag of gear. Any task where binding a package is the goal and the directional load is not going to change or shift. Bundling arrows for transport in a quiver or case is a natural field use — stable load, matched-diameter cord, symmetric hold.
When Not to Use It
Critical loads of any kind. Different-diameter lines — the knot will hold briefly and then spill without warning once the mismatch in stiffness causes one bight to deform. Any situation where the load direction might shift — the capsize risk is fast and complete. Do not use it to join two lines for hauling, climbing, or any pulling task. The square knot’s reputation as untrustworthy comes almost entirely from using it outside its actual purpose.
Common Mistakes
Tying a granny knot instead. The granny knot uses two identical crossings rather than mirrored ones — right over left twice, or left over right twice. It looks similar, capsizes faster, and binds harder when it does. If both ends emerge from the same side of the bights rather than the opposite sides, a granny knot was the result.
Using it on different diameters. One stiffer or larger line deforms the bight of the other. The knot holds under initial seating and releases unpredictably under load. For different-diameter joining, the sheet bend exists.
Trusting it under a shifting load. The oldest name for this knot, reef knot, tells you where it worked: reefing sail under a load that came from one direction and stayed there. The sailors who named it did not use it as an anchor line. Neither should anyone else.
