What It Is
The figure eight is the standard stopper knot for most rope applications where an overhand knot would accomplish the task but be impossible to undo afterward. The additional rotation it incorporates — one full 180-degree wrap around the standing part that the overhand knot skips — produces a larger, more symmetrical bulk. That bulk seats against a hole, ring, or block more cleanly than an overhand, and can still be worked loose with a few firm bends of the rope after loading.
It belongs to the same overhand family as its simpler predecessor, sharing the fundamental structure of crossing the working end over the standing part and threading it through a loop. The difference is entirely in what happens between the initial cross and the threading. Where the overhand passes the working end through immediately, the figure eight makes an additional revolution around the standing part first, creating the characteristic double-lobed shape before the thread-through completes the knot. That extra rotation is the source of both its cleaner form and its significantly better untie-ability. In climbing and rope safety systems, the figure eight is a foundation knot — specifically the rewoven or follow-through form, which builds a fixed end loop. The stopper form described here is the simpler starting point.
Anatomy

How to Tie It
- Hold the line, working end in your dominant hand.
- Cross the working end over the standing part to form a loop.
- Continue passing the working end around the back of the standing part, completing a full 180-degree revolution.
- Pass the working end down through the original loop from front to back.
- Pull to snug. The knot should show a clear figure-eight shape before tightening — two distinct lobes, upper and lower.
- If it looks like a plain overhand, the wrap in step 3 was missed. Untie and repeat.
When to Use It
As a stopper at the end of a line where the knot will be loaded repeatedly and untying later still needs to be possible. Rope course installations at 3D archery events — where stoppers must survive outdoor conditions, foot traffic, and repeated contact while still being removable by the crew afterward. Any application where the overhand knot would be technically correct but practically inconvenient after loading. The figure eight is also the basis for the rewoven figure eight, the standard fixed loop in technical rope work, which is worth learning once the stopper form is solid.
When Not to Use It
Where the bulk of the knot causes interference — the figure eight is noticeably larger than an overhand, which matters when working through small rings or tight guides. It is a stopper and a foundation for other forms, not a bend for joining two separate lines.
Common Mistakes
Tying an overhand instead. The figure eight is easy to get wrong without actively checking. Both knots start with the same crossing. The difference is one wrap. Check the shape before pulling snug — if only one lobe is visible, start over.
Not dressing the knot before tightening. An undressed figure eight has its loops arranged randomly. Arrange both lobes neatly so they sit parallel, then pull to seat. A messily dressed figure eight loads unevenly and doesn’t seat as cleanly against whatever it’s stopping against.
Setting it too hard to untie. The figure eight is resolvable after loading, but not if it’s been set under extreme tension with too short a tail. Leave enough working end — a few centimeters past the knot — so there’s something to push against when breaking it open later.
