What It Is
The bowline makes a fixed loop at the end of a line that will neither tighten under load nor slip loose under reduced tension. That combination — non-slip in both directions — is what distinguishes it from most other loop knots and what makes it one of the genuinely useful knots for anyone who needs to attach a line to an anchor point and retrieve it afterward without cutting the rope.
The knot’s structure locks the working end around its own standing part inside a collar, preventing the loop from drawing closed. Once the load comes off, the collar can be broken open with a counter-twist — something overhand-based loop knots cannot reliably offer after hard loading. The loop size is set during tying and does not change under load, which means the loop must be sized correctly before the knot is dressed. It belongs to the loop knot family. Its collar geometry is closely related to the sheet bend, which is why archers who know both sometimes notice the structural resemblance even though the applications are different.
Anatomy
Standing part — the long end of the line, connected to whatever holds the load.
Working end — the end that forms the loop and travels through the collar.
Eye — the fixed loop produced by the finished knot. Sized before dressing.
Collar — the two-strand section where the working end locks around the standing part. This is the locking mechanism.
How to Tie It
- Form a small overhand loop in the standing part by crossing the standing part over itself. This small loop is the collar eye — it is not the final working loop.
- Decide on the size of the working loop, then pass the working end up through the small collar eye from below.
- Bring the working end around behind the standing part.
- Bring the working end back forward and down through the small collar eye from above.
- Pull the standing part away from the collar while holding the working end, drawing the collar snug.
- Verify: the working end should be inside the working loop, lying alongside itself. Both strands of the collar should cross cleanly with no twist.
When to Use It
Fixed loop at the end of a line for anchoring to a post, ring, tree, or tie-down point. Hanging foam block targets or target butts in the field — the loop size can be set to fit cleanly over a stake or hook, and the knot releases after the season without damage to the line. Securing a ground blind or blind post to a stake or tree where the attachment needs to come apart cleanly afterward. Any situation where the loop size should be set and held, not allowed to tighten around whatever it’s attached to.
When Not to Use It
Applications where the knot will be loaded and unloaded repeatedly and quickly, with line vibration between cycles — the bowline can work loose without a backup on the working end tail. For those uses, add a half hitch around the standing part just outside the collar. Not the right choice under shock loads without a backup knot. The fixed loop is also a disadvantage when adjustable loop size is needed.
Common Mistakes
Tying the collar backward. If the working end passes around the outside of the collar loop rather than through it, the knot looks plausible but capsizes under load. The finished knot should have the working end exiting on the inside of the working loop, beside itself. If it exits outside the loop, the collar is wrong.
Not securing the tail. A bowline with an unfinished working end can back out under repeated loading cycles, vibration, or any application where the tension is not continuous. Adding a half hitch around one leg of the working loop with the tail eliminates this.
Setting the eye size after the collar is dressed. The working loop cannot be resized cleanly after the collar is seated. Set the loop to the right size during step 2, before dressing. Attempting to adjust by sliding the collar produces a misshapen knot that doesn’t seat correctly.
