What It Is
The Prusik is a friction hitch — a system where a loop of smaller cord, wrapped multiple times around a larger host rope, grips under load and releases for repositioning when the load is removed. It is not a knot in the conventional sense of a single structure tied in a line; it is a load-sensitive grip created by friction across the wraps. Pull the loop along the rope, and the wraps slide freely. Apply a load to the loop, and the wraps contract against the host rope and hold.
The behavior — gripping under load, sliding when unloaded — was documented by Karl Prusik in 1931 for emergency rope ascent in climbing situations. It remains a standard in technical rope work, rescue systems, and rope-access operations. In traditional archery, the Prusik hitch has a specific and legitimate application: recurve and longbow archers use a Prusik-style loop on the bowstring as a removable, adjustable nocking point. The friction wraps grip the string serving under nock pressure without permanently altering the string, and the nocking point can be repositioned between sessions without tools.
The materials and scale differ from climbing applications — thin braided cord or nylon thread on a bowstring rather than 5mm Prusik cord on an 11mm climbing rope — but the physics is identical. Diameter ratio and surface compatibility between the Prusik loop and the host determine whether the hitch grips cleanly or slides under load.
Anatomy
Host rope — the primary line the hitch slides on. In climbing: a fixed rope. On a bowstring: the served section near the nocking point.
Prusik loop — a separate piece of cord joined into a closed loop, typically with a double fisherman’s knot. The loop diameter should be roughly half that of the host rope.
Wraps — the turns made around the host rope. Three to four wraps is standard; fewer on high-friction surfaces, more on smooth or synthetic host rope.
Gate — the hanging loop that extends below the hitch and receives the load.
How to Tie It
- Prepare a Prusik loop: a cord joined into a closed loop with a double fisherman’s knot. On a bowstring, use a thin braided thread or narrow nylon cord; the right material depends on the string’s serving diameter and surface.
- Lay the loop alongside the host rope at the desired position.
- Pass one side of the loop around the host rope and through itself — this is the first wrap.
- Continue wrapping the same side around the host rope and through the standing loop, completing a full revolution each time. Three to four complete wraps is the standard.
- Pass the working end through the gate loop.
- Dress the wraps so they lie flat and parallel against the host rope. No crossing or overlapping.
- Test before trusting: apply a firm load. The hitch should grip immediately without sliding. Unloaded, the hitch should slide with firm finger pressure. If it slides under load, add a wrap. If it cannot be repositioned unloaded, the cord-to-rope diameter ratio is wrong.
When to Use It
Adjustable nocking point on a recurve or longbow string: the Prusik loop grips the serving and holds the nock position precisely during shooting, repositions cleanly between sessions without pliers or nock tools, and can be removed at season’s end without leaving a mark on the string. This is a genuine field application, not a workaround — it predates most modern nocking point hardware and remains the method of choice for many traditional archers. In rope work: ascending a fixed line, progress capture in hauling systems, and safety backup in rappel systems.
When Not to Use It
When the cord and rope diameters are incompatible — a Prusik cord nearly as large as the host rope will not grip reliably under load. A Prusik cord dramatically smaller than the host rope binds so hard it cannot be repositioned without tools. The general guideline: Prusik cord should be roughly 50% of the host rope diameter. On a bowstring, test before shooting. Not suitable for dynamic shock loads without a purpose-designed friction hitch system. Wet or iced synthetic cord behaves differently from dry; test conditions before depending on the hitch.
Common Mistakes
Too few wraps. Three is the reliable minimum for most cord-rope combinations. Below that, the hitch slides under load rather than gripping. For smooth synthetic host rope, four wraps is the safer starting point.
Wrong cord-to-rope diameter ratio. The diameter relationship between the Prusik loop and the host determines whether the hitch functions at all. Too close in diameter and the hitch slides. Too far apart and it locks so hard it damages both cords to reposition. This is the most common failure mode and cannot be corrected by adding wraps or changing technique — the cord needs to change.
Failing to dress the wraps flat. Overlapping or crossed wraps produce uneven grip and unpredictable release behavior. Every wrap should lie parallel to the others, evenly distributed around the host rope before the load is applied.
On a bowstring: using the Prusik on unserved string. The friction hitch needs a consistent surface to grip. Bare string with irregular strand geometry grips unevenly and can cause serving damage at the contact points. Apply serving to the nocking point area first, then add the Prusik loop above and below it.
