What It Is
The overhand knot is the most elementary structure in knotwork. It appears as a component inside most other knots — the half hitch, the figure eight, the square knot, the bowline — which is what earns it its position at the beginning of any serious survey of the subject. Structurally it belongs to the overhand family: single-strand knots formed by crossing the working end over the standing part and passing it through the resulting loop. Its primary function is as a stopper, placed at the end of a line to prevent it from passing through a hole, a guide, or a ring.
It is not glamorous. It is not the right choice for most of the jobs people routinely assign to it. It is, however, the knot from which everything else builds, and a person who does not understand it does not fully understand any knot that contains it. The overhand earned its place by being unreplaceable as a building block rather than by being the best at any particular task.
Anatomy
Standing end — the main body of the line, the part not being worked.
Working end — the free end used to form the knot.
Loop — the crossing structure formed before the working end is passed through.
How to Tie It
- Hold the line in your non-dominant hand with the working end hanging free.
- Bring the working end over the standing part to form a loop.
- Pass the working end through the center of the loop from below.
- Pull both the working end and the standing part in opposite directions until the knot seats against itself.
- Verify: the finished knot should be a compact, symmetrical lump on the line — not a loose coil.
When to Use It
As a stopper where a line needs to be prevented from sliding through a ring, hole, or grommet. At the end of serving thread on a bowstring — a small overhand knot holds the thread in place after finishing a serving wrap and stops it from backing out. As a quick field measure to prevent the end of a cut cord from fraying before a proper finishing can be added.
When Not to Use It
Under heavy or critical loads, the overhand knot jams hard and can be impossible to untie without a marlinspike or similar tool. It should not be used as a bend to join two separate lines — that requires a square knot or sheet bend. It provides no grip on a post or anchor point, so it has no function as a hitch. Tied in the middle of a line rather than at the end, it concentrates load at a single point and reduces the line’s working strength by approximately half.
Common Mistakes
Treating it as a general-purpose knot. The overhand knot gets used for tasks that have better solutions because it’s what everyone already knows. It is a stopper. Use it as one.
Tying it loose. An undressed overhand does not seat cleanly and may slip through whatever it’s meant to stop. The knot only functions when fully snugged.
Using it to join two lines. Two overhand knots side by side on parallel ends look like they should hold. They don’t. Under directional load they slide apart. This is the granny knot territory — visually plausible, mechanically unreliable.
