What It Is
Back serving is a wrapping technique — not a knot, strictly speaking, but placed in this series because it relies on the same principles as the knots that precede it: friction, geometry, and mechanical capture rather than a slipped loop or a tied end. The technique wraps serving thread tightly in a forward spiral over a section of bowstring, then locks the tag end by pulling it back under its own wraps. No adhesive. No additional fastener. The serving locks itself.
The word “back” describes the locking mechanism: the starting loop runs in the opposite direction from the wrapping, so that as the serving advances forward over the string, it simultaneously buries and covers the loop it began with. When the tag end is finally pulled through that starting loop and the loop is drawn back under the wraps, the tag end is captured beneath several layers of serving under full thread tension. The result is a flush, even serving that cannot work free from either end without unraveling the entire section.
The primary application on recurve and longbow strings is the nocking point area. Serving thread built up at the nocking point protects the bare string strands from nock wear, provides a consistent surface for nock fit, and can be used to position and locate the nocking point itself. Loop-end serving at the string eyes protects the loop structure from abrasion against the bow’s string grooves. In both cases, back serving produces a cleaner result than a knotted start because there is no knot lump under the wraps and no exposed tag end that can catch or lift.
Anatomy
Serving thread — the thread used for the wrap. Diameter matters: thicker thread builds up faster but leaves a coarser surface; finer thread produces a smoother result but requires more wraps to achieve the same build-up. The thread should be compatible with the string material in terms of hardness and grip — thread that is significantly softer than the string strands will compress unevenly under nock pressure.
The starting loop — a loop of thread laid alongside the string running opposite to the intended wrap direction, with one end extending past the start point. The loop tail will later receive the tag end for locking.
The working end — the long end of the serving thread, which makes all the wraps.
The reverse — the moment at which the working end changes direction and wraps back over the starting loop, burying it.
The lock — the final pass of the tag end through the starting loop and the drawing of the loop back under the serving, capturing the tag end beneath the finished wraps.
How to Do It
- Cut a length of serving thread roughly twice the intended serving length plus 30 cm. Fold it to find the midpoint — this is where the starting loop will be formed.
- Lay the loop alongside the string at the starting point, oriented opposite to the direction you will wrap. The loop itself should extend forward into the area to be served; the loop’s two tails should point back toward where the serving will end.
- Hold the loop in place against the string and begin wrapping the working end forward — in the same direction as the loop extends — over both the string and the starting loop simultaneously. Each wrap should be snug against the previous one, with consistent tension. The serving should advance at an even rate without gaps or loose spots.
- Continue wrapping until the desired serving length is reached. Stop just before the loop tails emerge from under the serving. The loop opening should still be accessible just past the last wrap.
- Pass the working end (the tag end of the serving) through the opening of the starting loop. The tag end should go through from whatever direction pulls it back under the wraps rather than forward off the string.
- Pull firmly on both tails of the starting loop simultaneously, drawing the loop — and the tag end threaded through it — back under the last several wraps of serving.
- Pull until the tag end disappears beneath the serving and resistance increases sharply. The lock is complete when the tag end is fully captured under wraps and cannot be pulled free by hand.
- Trim both exposed tails of the starting loop flush with the serving surface.
When to Use It
Nocking point protection on recurve and longbow strings: serving thread built up at the nocking point provides the nock a consistent surface to index on, protects the underlying string strands from repeated nock pressure, and can be used to build up the nocking point diameter slightly if the nock fit is loose. Loop-end serving at the string eyes, where the string contacts the bow’s limb tip grooves: abrasion from the groove surface can cut through bare string strands quickly; served loop eyes are standard on traditionally constructed strings. Reinforcing any section of a string that has experienced localized wear before the wear progresses to strand damage.
When Not to Use It
Over factory-applied serving on modern compound strings without careful consideration of what the added diameter will do to nock fit and cam timing. Factory serving is applied to a calibrated diameter; adding thread over it changes both the nock snap and, potentially, the string’s effective brace geometry at the cam. If the goal is repairing factory serving that has worn through, the cleaner solution is removing the damaged section and reapplying it correctly rather than serving over the top. Back serving is also not appropriate where the string requires precise strand separation — on some traditional string constructions, the serving integrates with the loop structure in ways that require a different finishing approach.
Common Mistakes
Uneven wrap tension producing lumps. Every wrap must be pulled to the same tension as the one before it. Inconsistent tension produces a serving that is visibly uneven and may create an irregular nock position from shot to shot. Wrapping freehand without a serving tool is possible but requires deliberate attention to tension on every turn; a serving tool makes consistent tension easier to maintain across a long section.
Starting wraps that loosen before the lock is set. If the initial wraps over the starting loop are not snug enough, the starting loop can shift position before the tag end is locked through it. The first several wraps over the loop are the most critical — keep thumb pressure on the start point while establishing the first five to eight wraps. Once the loop is buried, the serving will hold its own.
Pulling the tag end in the wrong direction through the starting loop. The tag end needs to be threaded through the loop in the direction that pulls it back under the serving when the loop is drawn closed. Threading it through in the opposite direction pulls the tag end forward off the string end when the loop is drawn, which does not lock it. Before pulling on the loop tails, confirm the direction: the loop tails should pull the tag end toward the center of the serving section, not toward the edge.
Wrong thread diameter for the application. Thread that is too heavy for the string’s serving section produces a nocking point that is noticeably thicker than the surrounding serving, which changes nock fit and can cause indexing inconsistency. Thread that is too fine requires significantly more wraps to achieve the right surface and may compress unevenly under load. Match the serving thread to the diameter of whatever serving already exists on the string, or select based on the target nocking point diameter and nock throat size.
