League night. The hall smells like foam bales and burnt coffee. Somebody's phone is going off in a quiver two lanes down and nobody will admit whose it is. You're on bale 14, shooting a Vegas round you've shot ninety times, and you care about this one specifically — the archer you've been trading with all season is on bale 12, and he is clean.
Third end, second arrow. It goes off early. That little clip of the shot where the trigger arrives ahead of the rest of you. High right, a 7 you can read from the line without the scope. Then the advice arrives:
After a bad arrow, four pieces of advice will arrive within thirty seconds. Sometimes from the same well-meaning person:
"Breathe."
"Just relax."
"Focus on your shot."
"Don't think about it."
All four of these appear in real sports psychology. At most one is right for your situation. Two will make your next arrow worse. (You are going to hear all four before the end of the third end. Probably from the same person.)
That is the entire problem with the mental game as it's normally delivered: real tools, no diagnosis. You wouldn't reach for a random allen wrench and start turning things. Same logic applies here. A tool without a diagnosis isn't a tool — it's clutter with good intentions.
The framework from Part 1 runs underneath all of this. Pressure takes bandwidth and breaks the shot in exactly two ways:
DISTRACTION — attention leaves the task. Shot runs on what's left.
EXPLICIT MONITORING — attention returns and supervises. Shot jams.
Opposite failure modes. Opposite cures. Match the tool to the failure. If you don't know your failure mode yet, the diagnostic question is at the end of Part 1 and it takes about four seconds.
Tool 1: Breathing (the version that actually works)
"Take a deep breath" is not a protocol. It's something people say when they don't know what else to say.
The physiological sigh. Inhale through the nose. At the top, add a second short sharp sniff — you're topping the tank off. Then one long, slow, complete exhale through the mouth.
You have done this involuntarily the last time you stopped crying after you sailed that arrow over the buck (don’t worry, the video was deleted). Your nervous system runs it on its own schedule when it needs to reset. The technique is just taking the controls on purpose.
The best controlled comparison of brief breathing protocols (Balban et al., 2023, Cell Reports Medicine) randomized participants to five minutes a day for 28 days of cyclic sighing, box breathing, cyclic hyperventilation, or mindfulness meditation. Cyclic sighing — exhale-weighted — outperformed everything else on mood improvement and respiratory rate reduction. Box breathing was in the study. Box breathing did not win.
The mechanism is one biological fact: heart rate rises on the inhale and falls on the exhale. The exhale is the active ingredient. Everything else is scaffolding. If you like the structure of box breathing (4/4/4/4), just make it asymmetric: four in, hold four, eight out. The counting still occupies the channel anxiety wanted. The exhale now does actual work.
Be honest about what that study shows: 28-day daily practice, general population, mood outcomes. Nobody held a bow. The mechanism transfers; the measurement doesn't prove it for your specific between-arrow window. Train it at home until it's boring, then it's there when you need it.
Box breathing (4/4/4/4) is more useful for the bandwidth reason than the physiological one: counting to four, four times, in a fixed loop occupies exactly the space anxiety was planning to rent. Takes ninety seconds. Lives between ends, not inside a 20-second shot clock.
Best for distraction — occupies the channel. Monitoring archers: one sigh only. A ninety-second ritual becomes a ninety-second opportunity to audit your mechanics.
Tool 2: Quiet Eye (the strongest evidence in this series)
Quiet eye is the final sustained fixation on the target before you execute — stable gaze, within about three degrees of one specific point, beginning before the final movement. Not a mindset. Not a feeling. A measurable eye behavior, and the best-documented difference between people who hit things consistently and people who don't.
The archery numbers, from Gonzalez et al. (2017, Experimental Brain Research) — actual field archery with electro-oculographic tracking:

Experts held a final stable fixation for nearly two seconds. Novices managed three-quarters of one. Longer quiet eye tracked smaller radial error across all participants (R² = 0.38). The meta-analysis across sports (Lebeau et al., 2016) shows a moderate-to-large effect. Quiet-eye training protects attentional control under pressure (Vine & Wilson, 2010).
Here's the part that changes what you do: the expert advantage was in the onset, not the offset. Experts started the fixation earlier (d = 0.86 between groups). When quiet eye ended didn't differ significantly between groups. You don't lengthen it by staring harder at the follow-through. You lengthen it by committing sooner — eyes on a specific point before the bow comes up, not when the pin floats into aim.
Under difficulty, expert quiet eye got longer in the lab task. Novices' didn't change. Pressure makes beginners look around. It makes experts look harder. That's the skill.
How to train it: pick one specific point — not the yellow, the exact intersection of the X lines, a single fiber in the foam. Find it before the bow comes up. Don't leave it. Film your face at 60fps occasionally — most self-described careful aimers are running half a second of actual quiet eye, not two.
Tool 3: Instructional Self-Talk (not the kind you’ve been using)
Self-talk works. The meta-analysis (Hatzigeorgiadis et al., 2011): d ≈ 0.48 — a moderate, real, replicated effect. Not a transformation. A nudge in the right direction.
The moderator is what makes it archery-specific: instructional self-talk outperforms motivational for fine motor tasks. "Elbow through" outperforms "COME ON."
This is unfortunate, because "COME ON" is far more satisfying to say and looks better in highlight reels. But archery doesn't need more arousal. It needs somewhere specific to point the attention that's already there.
Build a cue: two or three words, a direction not a verdict. If you're a monitor — point it outward: "through the spot," "push it there." Internal focus on your release hand, when you're already over-monitoring, is the last thing that situation needs. If you're distracted: a task anchor — "front shoulder," "feel the wall."
One cue. All season. Use it on good arrows more than bad ones — you're linking a word to a movement pattern, and you want the association to be the good one.
Tool 4: The Card
Everything above is fair-weather equipment. The card is for when the weather breaks.
Three ends from the finish of something that matters. Everything arrives at once: scorecard math running without permission, the awareness that everyone is watching, your heart rate doing something your shot process doesn't need, and — the worst one — the sudden certainty that you've forgotten how to shoot a bow. (Nine thousand arrows. No memory of how bows work. Completely normal.) The feeling is not entirely wrong. Your bandwidth is gone. The thing that would let you think clearly is exactly the resource that just got consumed.
In that state, you cannot design a solution. Asking yourself to pick the right coping strategy while you're in crisis is like asking a pilot to calculate glide ratios from first principles when the engine quits at four hundred feet. You don't do that. You read the card you wrote on the ground, in a quiet room, when you had all day.
The card is not a self-help gimmick. It is the plan that exists outside the head that's about to fail.
The structure is Peter Gollwitzer's — implementation intentions, "When X, then I will Y" — a named trigger and a specified action, decided in advance, so the moment doesn't have to compile one:
When I notice I'm doing scorecard math between arrows, then I set the bow on the stand, run one sigh, and pick my fixation point before I pick the bow back up.
When the shot doesn't break in my normal window, then I let down. Every time. "Just this once" is how letting down stops working.
When I drop a point, then I do the same three things in order — bow down, exhale, cue word — and diagnose nothing until the end is scored.
The trigger is a symptom you can actually detect. "Then I calm down" is not an action — it's a wish. "Then I set the bow on the stand" is something a body can do.
Write three. Not ten — three. Put them on an actual card in your quiver or bow case. The card being physically there is the mechanism. It's the plan that exists outside the head that's about to need it.
Implementation intentions have a strong evidence base in health and goal psychology. The evidence in live sport under acute arousal is thinner — no archery-specific trial exists that I could find. Write the card anyway. The downside of being wrong is some useful self-reflection on a Tuesday night and a card in your bow case you never use.
One more tool, offered as reasoning rather than measurement: rehearse the recovery, not the highlight reel. Mental practice tends to be a montage of perfect arrows. You never choke on the ones you imagine going perfectly. What you don't have a rehearsed template for is the 7, the frozen anchor, the last arrow of the match you were winning. So rehearse those instead. See it go wrong. Feel the drop. Then run your reset in imagery and put the next one in the middle. If it makes you start dreading the bale, stop — that's a real risk, not a caveat. But if it works, what it trains is familiarity with the exact state you'll actually be in, which is worth more than any number of imagined X's on a quiet Tuesday.

Build the protocol in three layers. Don’t skip to three.
Layer 1 — daily, at home. Five minutes of physiological sighing, zero stakes, nothing at risk. Boring. This is what was studied. Habit formation research (Lally et al., 2010) puts the median to automaticity around 66 days — not 21. Budget accordingly.
Layer 2 — the shot layer. One sigh in a fixed position in the routine. Fixation point committed before the bow comes up. One cue word, same word, on good arrows and bad.
Layer 3 — the card. Three if-then rules, written on a good day, about the failures you actually have. Carried physically. Consulted when the good day version of you needs to bail out the bad day version.
Diagnosis drives everything. The same tool applied to the wrong failure mode makes it worse. A distracted archer given a longer checklist gets more distracted. A monitoring archer told to focus on the shot process gets more stuck.
Blur or narrating. That's the whole game.

Six articles. One argument.
Pressure doesn't add anything to you. It takes something away — the bandwidth your shot process needs — and what takes it is a background process you can learn to name, diagnose, and manage. Once you know what's actually being taken and by what, the problem becomes workable. Not easy. Workable.
The mental game deserves the same interrogation you'd give your tune: which things replicated, which things didn't, what the error bars are, and what to actually do about it. You already apply that standard to your chronograph and your paper tune. Apply it here too.
The mind is equipment. It goes out of tune under load. The symptoms are specific enough to diagnose. The corrections are specific enough to apply.
Go write the card. It takes ten minutes and it's the most useful thing in this series.
