6:52 a.m. You've been in the stand since dark. The cold has been working its way through your boots for two hours. Every squirrel in the county has spent forty minutes convincing you it's a deer — that erratic scratch-scramble-silence that is emphatically not a cadence.
Then one sound is different. Crunch. Crunch. Pause. Something moving on four legs with purpose, from behind your left shoulder — the one direction you can't look without moving. Your hand finds the bow hanger without a thought. Hands steady. Some quiet part of you thinks: okay, good. I'm calm this year.
He steps out at thirty-two yards.
And then the shakes arrive. Not before — after. One beat you're a hunter; the next you're a person in a tree with a stranger's hands. That's the part nobody warns you about: that you feel fine right up until the animal commits. That's also the whole subject of this article.
In 2016, researchers at Slippery Rock University put leadless ECG monitors on nineteen deer hunters and sent them into the field. Not a simulation. Not a lab. Real stands, real deer, continuous cardiac monitoring throughout the hunt.
For context: 85% of max heart rate is what exercise physiologists classify as vigorous-to-hard interval training. These hunters were sitting in trees. Doing nothing. A deer walked out of the woods.
Three of the six hunters who climbed a tree stand hit that threshold just from the climb. One hunter dragging a carcass recorded 91% of max. Another, with no documented cardiovascular disease, produced an exercise-induced ischemic ECG change. Arrhythmias appeared in participants with and without cardiac history.
n = 19, one study, one region, one season. But here's what it proves: the thing is real, physiological, and substantially larger than the hunting-camp explanations admit. The tremor in your hands has a waveform.
It isn't fear. That's the whole problem.
"It's just nerves" carries the implication of weakness and the prescription of toughness. Neither is accurate or useful.
Nothing in that woodlot is trying to eat you. A whitetail's entire existence is organized around leaving. Your body knows this. It dumps catecholamines into your bloodstream anyway, because what's firing is the machinery for high-stakes, sudden-onset, irreversible, once-only opportunity — and that system does not distinguish between predator and prey. It cares that something enormous is about to be decided in the next few seconds and you don't get a second run. Whether that's a threat or a trophy is not a distinction it makes.
This is a fire alarm wired to the toaster. Beautiful engineering, total competence, completely wrong input — because you are not going to sprint, throw, or grapple. You are going to execute a fine-motor task with a quarter-inch tolerance, using a machine tuned to a thousandth, while holding perfectly still. Every adaptation that system just handed you is a liability for that job.
Three problems, not one
The two failure modes from Part 1 — distraction and explicit monitoring — both show up in a tree stand. But hunting adds a third that is neither, and most buck-fever advice fails because it treats all three as one thing.
DISTRACTION. Is he legal? How wide is that spread? Is that a second set of footsteps behind the first set? If I miss this I have to explain it to the group chat, which has twelve people in it. Each thought is a live process competing for the bandwidth the shot needs.
EXPLICIT MONITORING. Under extreme arousal, some hunters begin supervising a draw they've executed ten thousand times. They think about the grip. They manage the anchor. They narrate the pull to themselves. The centipede — twenty-one feet up, one shot, no do-overs — asked which leg goes next.
GROSS PHYSIOLOGICAL TREMOR. Your hands are shaking. This is not an attention problem. This is skeletal muscle receiving an adrenergic signal and doing precisely what it was instructed. You can have perfect attention — clean, external, textbook — and the pin will still be dancing.
Two of these are attentional and can be trained for. The third is chemical and cannot be reasoned with. Running the same mental tool at all three is why most advice in this space doesn't work.
You don’t fix the tremor. You route around it.
Reduce the amplitude at the arrow. Get into bone rather than muscle — skeletal alignment and back tension tremble less than arm strength under an adrenergic signal. Add contact points wherever the position allows: tree, knee, stand rail. Loosen the bow hand. A grabbed bow transmits every tremor as torque. A relaxed hand cannot transmit a shake it isn't holding.
Reduce what the shot requires. Your effective range in October is not your range in July, and it is definitely not the distance at which you once shot a clean group at foam while warm, rested, on flat ground, with nothing at stake. A tremoring hand at eighteen yards is inside the vitals. At forty, it's a coin flip with consequences. Shrink the task below what the tremor can ruin and the tremor stops mattering.
Reduce how long you hold it. Draw at the right moment, settle, execute — or let down cleanly and reset. The letdown is a shot-saving skill, and almost nobody practices it. A hunter at full draw for forty-five seconds waiting for one more step is not making a shot. He is running an endurance event and hoping an accident is good enough. (He is also going to take the shot.)
Which is closely related to the highest-leverage mechanical habit in bowhunting: draw early. Not when he's at perfect broadside in the clear. Before he enters the lane — as his head goes behind a tree, while he's feeding with it down, before you think you need to. The hunter who draws at the right moment has time to settle. The one who waits for certainty draws in a rush into a deer that may already be looking. Compound let-off is a psychological tool as much as a mechanical one: it hands you a holding window to work in. Use it. For traditional and barebow hunters, where there's no let-off and full weight means you can't hold long, “draw early” means the draw is faster and more committed, not earlier in absolute time — which is exactly why the if-then decision work in the next section matters even more.
Move the decisions out of the window
This is worth more than everything above.
So make the decisions before. In the dark. Before anything is happening.
Range the world, not the deer. First ten minutes in the stand: the leaning maple is 22 yards. The double oak base is 31. The near edge of the scrape is 17. Put the rangefinder away. You've converted a live arithmetic problem at 85% of max heart rate into a memory lookup, and memory lookups survive adrenaline far better than mental math.
Set your if-then rules out loud, in the dark, before anything shows up. The structure is simple and the research behind it is solid in health and goal psychology: "When X, then I will Y." Pre-specified trigger and action, decided in quiet, so the moment doesn't have to compile one from scratch.
When he clears the maple and stops broadside inside 31, then I draw as his head goes behind the trunk.
If he's past the corner post, then I do not draw at all.
If he's quartering toward me, then I hold, whatever he does next.
If he hangs up and stares at the stand, I stand still and let him walk.
Say them out loud. They feel ridiculous. Say them anyway. (They feel ridiculous in a dark truck at 4:30 a.m. You will feel more ridiculous explaining the miss.) You're not making a plan — you're pre-installing a program so the moment doesn't have to write one while your heart rate is at 85% and your hands are shaking.
The shot you don't take
Sometimes the best possible outcome of good mental management is an arrow that never leaves the bow.
When the rule says no, you let down, you watch the deer walk off, and you sit with a nervous system full of unspent chemistry and nowhere to put it. That is genuinely miserable and there is no point pretending otherwise.
But the arrow is irreversible the moment it leaves. In a tournament, a bad arrow costs you points. Here, the cost is different in kind, not just degree.
There’s an argument worth making: the best preparation for a hunting shot might be a high-stakes tournament. And the best preparation for a high-stakes tournament might be hunting. Not because the scenarios are similar — they’re not. But the neurological state is identical. Sudden. Irreversible. Once-only. The same adrenergic chemistry, the same tremor, the same window closing. Archers who compete regularly report that their first clean hunting shot after a tournament season felt different. More familiar. The tremor was still there. The heart rate was still there. But they’d been in that state before — standing on a 3D course with a score on the line and strangers behind them — and the body remembered how to function in it. Practice under low stakes teaches your hands. Practice under high stakes teaches your nervous system. The tournament and the tree stand are running the same program. The only difference is which one you’re in when you loose the arrow.
