There is one criterion that has to be met before you change anything: your current draw weight needs to be clean through the end of a full session, not just the first twenty arrows. The last arrow of the day should look mechanically like the third. If it doesn’t, the weight is already too high — and the problem isn’t that you need a heavier bow.

Part 1 of this series named the muscles that drive the draw. This article is about building them deliberately, so that moving to a heavier draw weight becomes a mechanical outcome of that training, not a test of willpower applied to a broken pattern.
Why the end of the session is the standard
The muscles that fail late in a round are the same muscles that will carry the heavier weight. If the form is collapsing at arrow forty, those muscles are already at their limit. Adding poundage above a degraded form doesn’t fix the weakness — it trains around it until something fails.
The right time to increase draw weight is when you can shoot your full normal session volume with clean mechanics from the first arrow to the last. That standard is harder to meet than most archers think, because fatigue is gradual and the compensation is subtle. The form doesn’t look obviously wrong — it just drifts.
The muscles that actually limit you
Most archers who want to shoot heavier weight focus on the wrong variables — usually the forearms, the arm, general grip strength. None of those are the limiting factor.
The draw is driven by scapular retraction. The rhomboids and middle trapezius are the primary movers. They pull the shoulder blade toward the spine, and the draw arm follows. If you’re still thinking of the draw as an arm movement, this is the foundational correction.
The constraint most archers reach before those muscles is the posterior deltoid. It’s smaller, endurance-limited, and engaged on every single arrow. It fatigues before the rhomboids do in most archers. The collapsing anchor late in a session — the elbow dropping, the anchor creeping forward — almost always comes from the rear delt giving out first.
Supporting the system are the latissimus dorsi, which stabilize the draw-side shoulder and prevent it from riding up under load, and the lower trapezius, which controls scapular depression. Lower trap weakness is underappreciated. When it’s not doing its job, the whole draw-side shoulder climbs, and everything upstream of it looks inconsistent as a result.
These four groups are what actually limit draw weight in practice. Build them, and the heavier bow becomes manageable. Skip them and max out the bow anyway, and the body will adapt — just not in the direction intended.
Building draw-specific strength
Band work
Band training is useful because it lets you load the draw pattern outside a gym with low risk and no equipment. The movements that transfer best:
Archer pull with resistance band. Orient the band to match your draw angle and pull through the full scapular retraction. The shoulder blade moves first. The elbow follows. This is not an arm exercise and it doesn’t work as one.
Single-arm rows. One arm, one anchor point. The key finish is a full retraction — shoulder blade pulled hard toward the spine at end range, not just a partial pull with the arm.
Face pulls. High-attachment face pulls target the rear deltoid and external rotators directly. Two sets before a shooting session is a reasonable standing addition to practice warmup.
Band pull-aparts. Pull a band apart horizontally with straight arms, hold a brief squeeze at end range. Simple, but effective for the rear delt and lower trapezius together. The rotator cuff is involved as a stabilizer, which matters.
Gym work
Four exercises cover most of the transfer:
Seated cable rows. The most specific gym analog to the draw stroke. The critical cue is also the most frequently ignored one: initiate the movement with the scapula, not the arm. The shoulder blade drives the elbow backward. The bicep is not the point. If you’re not thinking about that distinction on every rep, you’re training your arm.
Dumbbell rear delt flies. Bent over at the hips, arms sweeping backward in a wide arc. Light weight, controlled execution, high reps. The rear deltoid is an endurance muscle — it responds to volume, not heavy loading. Training it heavy trains the wrong quality.
Lat pulldowns. Reinforce scapular depression on both sides. Pull to the upper chest, keep the torso still, drive through the elbows. This builds the same shoulder-down stability that holds the bow arm in place through the shot.
Dumbbell rows. Single-arm, full retraction at the top. The same scapula-first cue applies. The finishing position — shoulder blade fully retracted, elbow behind the torso — is the position that matters.
On the bow
The most specific training is the least complicated: let-off draws without releasing.
Draw to anchor. Hold 5 to 10 seconds. Let down slowly. Repeat. This loads exactly the muscles that will carry the heavier weight, under exactly the demand they’ll face in a shot — minus the release. No band, no gym, no translation problem. If there are fifteen minutes before a practice session, this is what to do with them.
Reduced poundage volume shooting works alongside the off-bow strength work. Drop the bow 5 to 10 pounds temporarily, shoot high arrow counts, and rebuild the pattern cleanly. The reduced load allows volume without accumulated fatigue collapsing the form — which is the opposite of what happens when you max out a bow and grind through it.
Progressing the bow weight
The increment is small: 2.5 to 5 pounds at a time. Never jump a full turn on most cam systems — that’s too large a step.
When poundage increases, shoot reduced volume for the first few sessions at the new setting. Half the normal arrow count, attention on form through to the end of that reduced session. Once full session volume is achievable with clean mechanics at the new weight — form on arrow fifty matching form on arrow five — the weight is integrated. Not before.
The urge to move faster is normal and worth resisting. The limiting factor is not motivation. It is the adaptation rate of the small stabilizing muscles, particularly the rotator cuff, which lags behind the large movers. The rhomboids and lats will feel ready before the joint is ready. That gap is where injuries happen.
Do not increase draw weight during competition season. The adaptation period introduces form variability that doesn’t belong at a registered shoot.
What not to do
Do not max out the bow and try to shoot it into submission. This gets framed in archery culture as a conditioning method. It is not. The body adapts to the pattern it’s given. Training at a poundage that collapses the mechanics reinforces the compensated pattern. The weight doesn’t fix the weakness — it loads it until something tears.
Do not skip rotator cuff work. The rotator cuff doesn’t announce weakness until it fails, and when it fails, it fails completely. The shoulder joint gives out before the rhomboids do. Band pull-aparts, face pulls, and external rotation work are not additions to the training plan — they are what keeps the rest of it running. An archer who builds significant rhomboid and posterior delt strength without maintaining the rotator cuff has created a force the joint can’t manage.
Do not increase poundage if form is already breaking down before the session ends. The ceiling is already in view. Adding weight above a pattern that’s already degrading produces a heavier degraded pattern.
Timeline
For most archers doing consistent, dedicated work — band and gym training two to three times per week alongside regular shooting — 5 to 10 pounds of draw weight increase is realistic in three to six months.
That is slower than most archers expect. It is also faster than the alternative, which is maxing out the bow, shooting through compensation, and arriving at an injury before arriving at a clean heavier draw. The adaptation is in the small muscles. They don’t rush.
