Now what: nine archetypes, and where each one goes

The companion article covers the mechanism — what target panic is, why it happens, and what the research actually supports. This section is the map. For the archer who has read the mechanism and is thinking fine, but which one do I have and what am I supposed to do about it — this is that section.


There is a particular kind of silence that happens when an archer finally describes their target panic accurately to another person, and that person nods.

Most archers never get that. They say "I have target panic" and the person across from them hears something entirely different from what was meant, and hands back advice for a condition the archer doesn't have. The archer tries it. It doesn't work — or it works for three weeks and then stops working, which is worse. They conclude that they're a special case, or that target panic can't be fixed, or that they're simply not built for this.

None of those conclusions are correct. What happened was a naming failure.

The companion piece to this one explains what target panic is — the nervous system's anticipatory machinery attaching itself to the shot cycle, and why that is a normal thing for a brain to do rather than evidence of a defect. That article is the mechanism. This one is the map. For the archer who has read the mechanism and thought fine, but which one do I have and what am I supposed to do about it on Tuesday — this is that article.

What follows is a set of descriptions written to be recognized rather than studied. Each one opens with a scene. If a scene makes the reader uncomfortable, that discomfort is the diagnostic. Read all of them anyway, including the ones that don't fit, because a substantial number of archers are running two of these at once and the second one is usually the one doing the real damage.

A warning about how to use this: none of these are identities. They are positions on a map, and the map has directions of travel. The entire point of naming a position is to know which way to walk from it.


First, a number

Before the descriptions, some context that almost no archer is ever given.

In 2020, Clarke, Sheffield and Akehurst surveyed 155 precision athletes — 86 golfers and 69 archers — using trait measures alongside self-reported experience of yips and choking. Across that sample the prevalence came back at 39.4% for yips and 67.7% for choking. That is not a fringe condition affecting unlucky people. That is most of the line.

The golf literature, where the research runs deeper, has found yips prevalence anywhere from 17% to 54% depending on who is asked and how the question is phrased — Klämpfl and colleagues catalogued that spread across samples in 2015, and a large scale-development study in 2025 covering 883 athletes landed at roughly 28% reporting symptoms.

Two things follow from those numbers, and they pull in opposite directions.

The first is that any archer with this is in the majority, or close to it. The archer on the next bale who looks entirely untroubled either has a version of this, is managing a version of it, or is between episodes of it. The isolation that comes with target panic — the conviction that everyone else has a clean shot and you alone are broken — is factually wrong. It is also, cruelly, part of what sustains the condition, because archers who believe they are uniquely broken don't talk about it, and archers who don't talk about it never discover how ordinary it is.

The second is less comforting. When one study finds 17% and another finds 54% in the same sport, those studies are not measuring the same thing. They are measuring different conditions that happen to share a name. The field has a definition problem, and that problem reproduces itself at the level of the individual archer every time someone says "target panic" and means something specific by it that the listener does not hear.

On the status of what follows. These nine descriptions are clinical in ambition but not in standing. They are a practical taxonomy assembled from coaching observation and organized along the fault lines the sports-science literature actually supports — they are not validated diagnostic categories, and no study has demonstrated that archers sort cleanly into nine groups. Where a description connects to established research, the research is named in the text. Where it is a pattern seen repeatedly on the line and arranged for usefulness, that is said plainly. A psychologist reading this should treat the archetypes as hypotheses worth testing. An archer reading this should treat them as a mirror, not a diagnosis.


1. The Unformed

Six months in. The archer is at the range on a Saturday, working through a dozen arrows, and the group on the target face is a scatter — one in the gold, three in the blue, one off the paper entirely. They are not upset about it. They're thinking about their grip, which the coach mentioned last week, and about whether their anchor is landing in the same place twice. Somebody two bales down groans at a shot and mutters something about their release. The archer doesn't know what that means yet. They draw the next arrow and think about their grip again.

What it feels like from the inside

Not like much, honestly. Still figuring it out. Some arrows are good and some are terrible and the reasons aren't clear yet. At full draw there's a queue of things to remember — grip, anchor, sight picture, back tension, breathe — and the cognitive traffic is heavy enough that there's no room left over for dread.

This archer does not have target panic. That is not yet a compliment.

What's actually happening

Panic requires expectation. It requires a body that has learned what's coming and formed opinions about it. This archer hasn't been at it long enough for that machinery to assemble. The inconsistency is mechanical — form, draw, anchor, timing — not psychological. There is nothing to panic about, because the shot has not yet become a reliable enough event for the body to bother predicting it.

Relative to their level, this is the cleanest shooting this archer will ever do. They have no idea.

The thing nobody tells the Unformed

It doesn't last, and the transition is close to universal. As technique improves and the body learns the shape of a shot cycle, it begins generating expectations. Expectations become predictions. Predictions become anticipation. The moment the shot starts to feel repeatable is the moment the ground turns fertile.

That is not an argument for staying bad. It's an argument for knowing what's coming.

Where it goes

Build a shot process with named, deliberate stages rather than one undifferentiated motion. This matters more than it sounds. When anticipation arrives — and it will — an archer with a named process has something to anchor to and something to diagnose against. An archer who has never articulated what their shot sequence actually is has nothing to hold when the body starts interfering, and experiences the interference as total, mysterious collapse.

Build the vocabulary before there's an emergency that requires it.


2. The Puncher

Indoor league, third end. The archer draws, settles, and the pin swings up toward the middle. They have told themselves — out loud, in the car, on the way here — that they are going to hold this one. The pin arrives. Something in the hand goes anyway. The arrow is in the 8 at four o'clock before the thought has finished forming. They lower the bow and say "I did it again," and the person next to them laughs sympathetically, because everybody knows this one. The archer draws the next arrow and tells themselves, with total sincerity and no effect whatsoever, that they are going to hold this one.

What it feels like from the inside

The problem is completely obvious. This archer punches the trigger, knows they punch the trigger, and can feel it coming — a pressure at full draw, a rising insistence, something that says go while the conscious mind is still saying wait. Then the finger goes.

They'll say my finger just goes, I can't stop it. Or I knew that one was bad before it left the bow. They watch themselves do it. The awareness is entirely intact and entirely useless.

Worse, and this is the part that makes archers feel insane: the harder they consciously resist, the faster it seems to happen. As if the body accelerates to stay ahead of the resistance.

What's actually happening

The body is completing the trigger movement before the brain has finished authorizing it. A specific moment in the shot cycle — usually peak draw, usually the pin entering the neighborhood of center — has been paired with fire often enough to become a conditioned reflex.

The paradox of conscious resistance making things worse is neither imagination nor weakness. It's the mechanism doing precisely what the research predicts. Sian Beilock and Thomas Carr demonstrated in 2001 that pressure drives athletes to attend to skills they normally execute automatically, and that the attention itself degrades the skill — a finding that has held up across two decades of replication. Gabriele Wulf's constrained-action hypothesis says the same thing from the other direction: attention directed inward, at the movement itself, disrupts the automatic processes that would otherwise run it cleanly. Richard Masters called the underlying failure reinvestment — the reinsertion of explicit, conscious control into a skill that had already been proceduralized.

Translated to the shooting line: thinking about the release finger is not a neutral act. It is an intervention, and the intervention is part of the problem. This archer is not failing to try hard enough. The trying is load-bearing in the wrong direction.

How to tell

Does this archer know a bad shot is coming before it arrives? The Puncher usually does, and that pre-awareness is real diagnostic information — the body telegraphs the anticipation before executing it.

Can they hold at full draw without the shot breaking? Not want to — physically can. The Puncher often cannot last more than a second or two.

Where it goes

The trigger currently occupies the position of finale in this archer's shot — the event everything else builds toward. As long as it holds that position, the body will keep rushing at it. The work is structural: demote the trigger from destination to waypoint.

In practice that means drills that extend and emphasize follow-through, that place conscious attention after the break rather than at it, and that give the shot somewhere to continue to once the trigger has moved.

The good news here is genuinely good and mostly wasted. The Puncher is usually early enough that the habit is real but not cemented, which makes this the widest intervention window that will ever be available. Most archers spend it, because punching is embarrassing rather than frightening, and embarrassment is a weak motivator compared to fear. The next stage is where it becomes frightening.


3. The Twitcher

The archer has spent the last hour on the bow, not on the shooting line. Rest height checked twice. Peep rotation checked. They've pulled the arrows and spun them for straightness. A shop tech tuned this bow six weeks ago and said it was clean. The archer goes back out, shoots a beautiful group of four, and then puts the fifth arrow in the 7 ring for no reason they can name — and the shot felt fine. Identical to the other four. They stand there looking at the target with the specific expression of a person who has run out of things to blame, and start thinking about arrow spine again.

What it feels like from the inside

Confusing. Genuinely, maddeningly confusing.

The shooting is inconsistent and the reason will not surface. A tight group, then an arrow in the 7, and the bad shot felt exactly like the good ones. No warning, nothing perceived, nothing to correct. The arrow is the first notification.

So the search turns to the equipment. Maybe the rest. Maybe the peep is rotating. Maybe spine. It's been tuned by someone competent and should be fine and isn't. This archer describes themselves as inconsistent rather than as someone with target panic — because there is no felt panic. There's nothing at all.

What's actually happening

This is the Puncher, later. The punch went underground.

What was once visible, felt, and theoretically resistible has become a reflex fast enough to execute below the threshold of conscious experience. This is genuinely worse than punching, because the one asset the Puncher had — awareness — has been stripped out. Nobody can resist what they cannot perceive, and there is now nothing to perceive.

This is also the version that gets blamed on equipment more than any other, and that misattribution is expensive. Archers spend years and real money chasing a mechanical fault that does not exist, because every other explanation has been eliminated and the bow is the last suspect standing.

How to tell

Do the bad shots come as a surprise? The Twitcher is genuinely surprised. The Puncher is not. That single question separates them.

Are groups clean at blank bale and scattered at distance? Tight at two meters, scattered at twenty, means the variable is the shot process. Equipment faults do not politely disappear at close range.

Does the bow move at the shot in a direction that can't be predicted? Inconsistent involuntary movement at the break is a strong signature of a submerged reflex.

Where it goes

Before anything else: make the twitch visible again. A reflex that can't be perceived can't be addressed, and restoring perception is its own piece of work rather than a warm-up for the real work.

Slow-motion video is the highest-value tool available — 120fps or better, aimed at the release hand and the bow arm, watching the final fraction of a second before the arrow leaves. Most Twitchers have never seen their own shot at that resolution, and watching it is frequently the turning point. The thing they've been told is happening becomes something they have seen happening, and those are different categories of knowledge that produce different amounts of conviction.

A draw board, a shot trainer, or blank-bale work with eyes closed can also surface the reflex by stripping away the conditions that normally provoke it. The sequence is: make it visible, then treat it as a Puncher — because underneath, that is what it is.


4. The Chaser

Indoor, and the archer has been at full draw for nine seconds. The pin is at four o'clock, just outside the ten. They push it left. It overshoots into the nine at eight o'clock. They pull it back right, and it swings past center again. Somewhere underneath all of this the pressure to fire is building, and they can feel the clock running on their own hold. So on the next pass they drive it — actively steer the pin into the middle and fire in the same motion, jamming the sight where they need it to be and pulling the trigger before it can escape. The arrow lands in the eight. On the walk down they are thinking that they just need to aim better. They have this backwards, and they will spend two years acting on it.

What it feels like from the inside

Aiming is work. That's the first thing this archer would tell you, and they'd say it as though it were obviously true of everyone.

The pin does not want to sit in the middle. It sits everywhere else — low left, high right, orbiting the thing they want it on — and getting it to center requires active effort, constant correction, steering. So they steer. They push the pin toward the middle, overshoot, correct back, overshoot again. The float isn't a float. It's a series of corrections, each one overshooting the last.

And then the pressure to fire arrives, and instead of waiting for the pin to be where it should be, they put it there. Force it in and fire in the same gesture. The shot and the aiming correction happen simultaneously — one movement, jammed together, because the middle is only going to be available for an instant and the shot has to happen inside that instant.

This archer will tell you their problem is aiming. They hold too long. They're an over-aimer. They've been told to relax and let the pin float, and they've tried, and letting the pin float just means it goes further from the middle and stays there. Some of them describe it as the pin being repelled by the ten ring — the one place on the entire target face it will not go.

Their good shots are the ones where they jammed it in and got lucky with the timing. Their bad shots are the same movement, slightly late.

What's actually happening

Two things have gone wrong and they are feeding each other.

The first is that aiming has become a motor task instead of a perceptual one. In a sound shot, the pin's position is largely an output — the result of a stable structure pointed at a target, with the float being what a human body does. This archer has made pin position an input, something to be actively driven and controlled moment to moment. That's a conscious, effortful, closed-loop correction process, and it is exactly the kind of intervention that Wulf's constrained-action hypothesis predicts will degrade performance. Internally focused, conscious control of a movement disrupts the automatic processes that would produce a better result unattended. The harder they steer, the worse the float gets. The worse the float gets, the more steering seems justified.

The second is that the shot has become welded to the correction. Because center is only ever achieved briefly and by force, the archer has learned that the moment of arrival is the moment to fire. The trigger and the final steering input have fused into a single motor act. This is why the advice to hold longer fails so completely here — holding longer means more corrections, more overshoot, more fatigue, and a worse shot at the end of it.

There's a cruel loop in this. The over-aiming is a response to the pin not settling. But the pin doesn't settle because of the over-aiming. The archer is treating the symptom with more of the cause, which is why this archetype tends to intensify over time rather than plateau. They aim harder every year, and every year it works slightly less.

The distinction from the Puncher matters for treatment. The Puncher's conditioned cue is full draw — a proprioceptive event. This archer's cue is the pin arriving at center under their own steering — a visual event they are actively manufacturing. Trigger-control drills, which help the Puncher, do very little here, because the trigger isn't operating independently. It's the terminal event of an aiming movement. Fix the aiming and the trigger problem is substantially reframed; drill the trigger alone and the archer will faithfully do the work for months and see nothing change.

How to tell

Is aiming effortful? Does getting the pin to the middle feel like something being done rather than something being allowed? That's the core of it, and most archers in this pattern will answer yes without hesitating, because they assume that's what aiming is.

Does the pin overshoot center in both directions repeatedly during a single hold? A genuine float wanders. A correction sequence oscillates — and the oscillation usually gets larger, not smaller, the longer the hold goes.

Does the shot fire at the exact instant the pin arrives at center, rather than during a period of it being settled there? If arrival and firing are the same event, they've fused.

Does holding longer make it worse in a way that seems unfair? For most archetypes more time is neutral or helpful. Here, more time means more correction cycles and a deteriorating shot.

And the one that gets to it fastest: at blank bale, with no target and nothing to steer toward, does the bow sit quiet? If the hold is calm with nothing to aim at and turbulent the moment there's a spot to hit, the turbulence is not stability. It's steering.

Where it goes

The work is to stop aiming with the bow arm and start aiming with the whole shot — which in practice means learning to accept a float and fire inside it rather than trying to eliminate it.

The most direct intervention is deliberately shooting without correcting. Draw, let the pin land wherever it lands, and execute the shot without any attempt to steer it into the middle. The arrows will scatter and that's fine, because the target of this drill isn't the target. It's the elimination of the correction reflex. Most archers find this genuinely difficult in a way that surprises them, and the difficulty is the diagnosis confirming itself.

From there, the float gets rebuilt as something to be tolerated rather than defeated. Hold and let the pin move without responding to it. Watch it wander through the middle and out again and do nothing about it. This is the same principle as the Puncher's decoupling work, but it is aimed at a different pairing — not full draw means fire, but pin arriving means fire.

Expect the float to look worse before it looks better. Removing active correction initially produces a wider, less controlled sight picture, and the archer's instinct will be that they've made things worse. What's actually happening is that they're seeing their real float for the first time in years, unmasked by steering. It shrinks on its own once the shot stops fighting it — but it shrinks on a timeline of months, not sessions, and the temptation to resume steering will be strongest right at the start.

One practical note: this archetype often benefits from a temporary reduction in magnification or a move to a larger aperture, if scope setup allows it. A high-magnification sight picture makes float appear enormous, and an archer already inclined to correct will correct more when the movement looks bigger. Reducing the apparent motion reduces the provocation while the underlying habit is being dismantled.


5. The Fugitive

There's a drawer at home. In it: an index release that was making them punch, a hinge that fixed everything for about a month, a thumb button that felt amazing in the shop, and a second hinge with a different moon setting. They're currently back on a wrist strap, which feels more natural, and it's going well. They are aware, in a way they don't examine closely, that they have said "it's going well" about each of the items in the drawer. Somebody at the club asks what release they're shooting now and they laugh and say they're still dialing it in.

What it feels like from the inside

Like progress. Like being the kind of person who tinkers, optimizes, and takes their equipment seriously.

Several releases tried, each with genuine strengths. The hinge worked better than the index — the index was causing the punch. Then the thumb button really helped for a while. Now back on a wrist strap, which feels more natural. Things go in phases: something works, then plateaus, then it's time to shake it up. That's just how improvement happens.

What's actually happening

Every change was preceded by discomfort and produced relief, and neither the discomfort nor the relief was ever named.

The shape matters more than the content: relief, return, change, relief. The panic goes quiet on a new release because the conditioned cue is genuinely disrupted — the new tool doesn't have the pairing attached to it yet. Then, across a few hundred shots, the anticipatory program locates the new configuration and re-attaches. Three weeks later it's back in different clothes, and the cycle runs again.

What makes this hard to see from inside is that every individual change is defensible. Releases really do have different characteristics. Draw weight really does affect timing. There is a legitimate version of equipment experimentation and it is outwardly identical to this. The difference isn't in the changes — it's in what preceded them.

The tell is in the language. This archer describes changes in terms of feel, improvement, or trying something new, and never in terms of a named diagnosis. Ask what specific problem the last change was meant to solve and the answer arrives atmospheric rather than specific.

How to tell

How many releases have been seriously used and retired? Past three or four is a marker.

Did the last switch produce immediate improvement that faded over weeks? Relief-then-return is the signature. A real equipment fix does not decay on that schedule.

What was the feeling that preceded the last change? If the honest answer sits closer to escape than to diagnosis, that was flight.

Where it goes

Stop changing things.

That is the whole intervention and it is much harder than it reads. This archer's panic is camouflaged by motion — they have never seen it clearly because they have never held still long enough for it to come fully into view. Pick one system, commit, and stay past the point where the urge to change kicks in.

Whatever surfaces then is the actual problem. It will be one of the other eight, and that is the thing being run from. The Fugitive isn't really an archetype in the way the others are. It's a strategy for never finding out which archetype you are.


6. The Compensator

State indoor. The archer has a routine and it is good: three breaths, a specific look at the target, a set number of steps to the line, bow up on the exhale. They have shot this routine ten thousand times and it works. On the fourth end, the archer beside them knocks over a quiver during their setup. Not loud. Just wrong. The archer resets, goes through the routine again, and something in it doesn't seat properly — the third breath arrives in the wrong place, the look at the target feels unfinished. They shoot anyway. Then they shoot the rest of the end badly, and the end after that, and by the time they've recovered they're eleven points down on a practice average they can hit in their sleep at home.

What it feels like from the inside

Like being a person with a good process and bad luck at tournaments.

The routine works. A breathing sequence, a number of steps, a focus point before the bow comes up, an order to everything. Run the routine, shoot well. This archer is a strong practice shooter and describes themselves as streaky, or as somebody who shoots better when it doesn't matter.

Then somebody coughs at the wrong moment, or the wind shifts, or the venue is unfamiliar, or a shot suddenly carries weight — and it comes apart in a way that seems wildly disproportionate to the size of the disturbance.

They attribute this to nerves. Everyone around them attributes it to nerves. They've been working on their mental game for two seasons.

What's actually happening

The routine is not preparation. It's containment.

Underneath it sits an unresolved shot problem, and the routine was built — usually unconsciously, across years — as a structure that holds that problem in place. Under controlled conditions the structure assembles completely and the shot underneath never has to be examined. The consistency that feels so reliable in practice is not the shot's consistency. It's the routine's.

Change the conditions, disturb one element of the scaffolding, and the thing it was containing operates unsupported for the first time, in front of the people who matter most.

This is the hardest archetype to identify from the inside, because practice generates no evidence for it. The routine performs flawlessly in every setting where evaluation is possible. The failure appears only in the settings where it is easiest to blame something else — pressure, nerves, environment, an off day.

How to tell

Does the routine feel mandatory or helpful? Helpful means good preparation. Mandatory means something feels wrong without it. That distinction is close to the entire diagnosis.

Is the response to a small disruption proportionate? A cough should cost a little. If a cough costs an end, the routine is carrying structural load it was never meant to carry.

Is the practice-to-competition gap larger and more consistent than nerves can explain? Some gap is universal. A large, predictable, repeated gap is the signature.

Where it goes

Introduce controlled disruption in practice, deliberately. Vary the routine. Remove pieces of it. Shoot out of order. Have someone interrupt at the wrong moment. Shoot without whichever element feels most necessary.

This is uncomfortable by design and it will make practice scores worse, which is the point — trading a false reading for a true one. The goal is not to destroy the routine but to discover what it has been covering, address that directly, and rebuild the routine afterward on top of a shot that's actually resolved. A pre-shot routine sitting on a sound shot is a real asset. The same routine sitting on an unresolved shot is a debt, and it comes due at the least convenient moment available.


7. The Sticky

Last end of the state championship. The archer is two points off the podium and knows it. They draw, settle, and the pin comes to rest at seven o'clock, low left, about an inch out. And stays. They wait for it to drift in. It doesn't. They tell their hand to fire. Nothing happens — not resistance, not hesitation, just an instruction that goes out and produces no result. Four seconds. Seven. Their bow arm is starting to shake from the hold. Someone down the line finishes their end. At about twelve seconds they punch it out of desperation, watch the arrow hit the blue, and let the bow down with the specific nausea of having just met something they don't have a name for. They will think about this end for two years.

What it feels like from the inside

This archer doesn't like talking about it.

The pin arrives somewhere — usually off-center, almost never in the gold — and stops. Not drifts. Stops. Full draw, everything loaded, and the command to fire simply does not arrive. Five seconds. Ten. Standing inside a body that will not complete the instruction.

Eventually they either punch their way out, which they will hate themselves for, or let down and start again, which the body has already learned solves nothing, because the next draw does the same thing.

If it has happened at a big event, they remember all of it. Where the pin was. Which end. What they shot afterward. They may describe it as just nerves that day or I got in my head — in a tone that doesn't match the words, because the memory is far more vivid than the explanation being offered for it.

What's actually happening

This is categorically different from everything above it, and the difference is direction.

Anticipation fires too early. This does not fire at all. These are opposite failure modes and they respond to opposite interventions. That is the most important sentence in this article.

Apply anticipation treatments here and they will usually make it worse. Surprise shooting requires handing timing authority to the subconscious — but in this archer, the subconscious is precisely the system that has declined to act. The method transfers control to the part of the nervous system that is already refusing. And a committed surprise system has no manual override, which is exactly the thing this archer needs most.

This maps onto a distinction the yips literature has carried for two decades. Aynsley Smith and colleagues, working in golf, described the condition as a continuum running between focal dystonia and choking — Type I presenting as involuntary jerks, twists and spasms, Type II as freezing, hesitation, overcontrol, and failure to complete the movement. Later work has largely preserved that split. The literature is clear that these are different presentations requiring different responses. The archery world, which has standardized heavily on surprise-family interventions, frequently is not.

This one also ignores the developmental order. It can arrive at any point in a career — to beginners, to journeymen, to decorated champions with decades behind them. It isn't a stage anyone progresses into. It's a trap door that can open anywhere on the map.

And it selects its moment. It appears at the largest event, in front of the biggest crowd, on the shot that carries the most. Ask around at any level of competitive archery and stories surface about careers that ended this way. That claim deserves an honest label: it is well known inside the sport and it does not appear to be formally documented anywhere in the archery literature. Nobody publishes a study on the athletes who quit. The golf research states directly that the yips have ended the careers of many professional athletes, which is the closest documented analog available, but the archery-specific version remains clinical folklore — strong, consistent, and unmeasured.

How to tell

Has this archer been unable to break a shot even while fully wanting to? Not reluctant. Unable.

Does the pin lock in a specific place? A consistent lock point is the signature — the body hasn't merely stopped, it has stopped somewhere, which means something has flagged that location as wrong.

Is onset tied to pressure, audience, or consequence? Pressure-dependent onset is strongly associated.

After an episode, do the following shots feel tentative, like waiting for it to return? Secondary anticipation of the freeze compounds the original problem and accelerates the entire pattern.

Where it goes

Restore conscious access to the shot. Do not remove it.

The direction of travel is toward deliberate, commanded control of the trigger — rebuilding a path from intention to action that the nervous system will actually carry to completion. This runs directly against the dominant advice in the sport, which is why these archers so often get worse under well-intentioned coaching.

There is real reason for optimism here, and it comes from an unexpected place. Victor Candia and colleagues, working with musicians who had focal hand dystonia, developed a behavioral retraining protocol called sensory motor retuning and then measured what it did to the brain. Using magnetoencephalography, they found that the disordered, smeared cortical representation of the fingers in affected musicians moved measurably back toward normal organization after treatment — and that the physiological changes tracked the behavioral improvement. That is direct evidence that a conditioned motor disorder in a highly trained expert can be genuinely reorganized rather than merely worked around. The population is musicians rather than archers and the transfer is an inference rather than a demonstration, but it is the strongest evidence available that this class of problem is not permanent.

This is slow work, and it is the one archetype where the honest recommendation is: get help, from someone who understands the Type I / Type II distinction. Applying the wrong treatment doesn't merely fail — it sets recovery back considerably. If a coach hears a description of freezing and responds by prescribing more surprise work without first distinguishing it from anticipation, that response is information about the coach.

Of everything on this map, this is the one worth taking seriously the first time it happens rather than the fifth.


8. The Recovery

Eight months into rebuilding. The archer is at a blank bale at five yards, shooting at nothing, and has been doing that four days a week since spring. Their indoor average is down eighteen points from last year. A training partner asked recently, with real concern, whether they'd thought about going back to the hinge — they were shooting so well on the hinge. The archer said no. What they didn't say is that they know exactly what the hinge was doing for them and exactly what it was hiding, and that they can now describe the problem in one specific sentence, which is more than they could do for the previous six years.

What it feels like from the inside

Bad. It feels bad, and this archer is doing it anyway.

Scores are down. Something that was superficially working has been dismantled on purpose. Training partners think there's a struggle happening and it can't really be explained to them. The old routine is right there, and returning to it would feel better immediately, and that option has been closed deliberately.

But for the first time, this archer can say precisely what they're working on — not in terms of equipment or method, but in terms of what actually happens inside the shot.

What's actually happening

They stopped running. They named it, chose a lane, and committed to going through rather than around.

This is the least comfortable position on the map and the only one that leads anywhere permanent. The scaffolding is down, the escape routes are closed, and the shot looks worse than it did six months ago because that is the price.

They will be misread by nearly everyone watching. What looks like decline is the removal of a surface that panic was hiding behind. There's no way to demonstrate this to observers, and waiting for external validation is itself a hazard, because it creates pressure back toward the version of shooting that produced better numbers and no progress.

How to tell

Was there a conscious decision to stop changing things and address one specific thing? The Fugitive-to-Recovery transition usually has a datable moment attached to it.

Are scores down, and is that genuinely accepted? Acceptance of the cost separates real recovery from a Fugitive move wearing better clothes.

Can the problem be stated precisely, in terms of shot mechanics rather than gear? Specificity is the marker. The Fugitive cannot do this and the Recovery archer can.

Where it goes

Stay. The primary risk is abandonment before completion.

Change the instrument. Score is the wrong measurement during retraining and watching it will do damage. The question after each shot is not where did it go but did I own that one. Ownership is the variable actually being trained, and score follows ownership on a delay long enough to be thoroughly discouraging if the wrong number is being watched.

Expect the urge to change something to spike right around the point where the work starts to bite. That urge is not new information. It's the old pattern making one more offer.


9. The Manager

Last end of a tournament they're leading by one. The archer draws, and everything is where it should be — the hold is good, the pin is behaving, the shot goes off and lands in the 10 ring. On the walk to the target they are not thinking about the 10. They're thinking about a half-second somewhere in the middle of that shot where something tightened, where the shot went from being something they were doing to something they were slightly steering. Nobody watching saw a thing. The arrow is in the middle. They know the difference anyway, and they will think about it later.

What it feels like from the inside

Good, mostly. And the edge is always locatable.

Scores are strong. Execution is clean by any external standard. Someone watching this archer shoot would find nothing to fix and would be broadly right.

What only this archer knows is that the edge is still there — not present in most shots, but present as a possibility, as terrain that has been visited. On the last end of the biggest event, when it's tight, something tightens. Not a punch. Not a freeze. A slight loss of ownership. A shot that was 95% deliberate instead of 100%. The arrow usually still goes somewhere good. And the difference between a shot that was owned and a shot that was gotten away with is perfectly legible from the inside, even when nobody else on earth can see it.

What's actually happening

This archer has genuinely worked through it to a functional, repeatable shot. The residual awareness of the edge is not a symptom — it's the most accurate diagnostic instrument in the sport, and it's the thing preventing a slide backward. They know where the line is because they've stood near it under load.

The temptation at this stage is to read that awareness as failure. It isn't. An archer reporting no awareness of the edge is either genuinely finished or has stopped paying attention, and the second is considerably more common than the first.

How to tell

Can they distinguish an owned shot from a gotten-away-with shot in the moment, without reference to where the arrow landed? Real-time internal discrimination is a high-level skill that most archers do not possess.

Does the process feel different at major events even when the results don't change? A process difference invisible from outside is the signature.

Have there been competition shots that felt identical to practice? The Manager has had them, and also knows they aren't yet the default under maximum load.

Where it goes

The gap between here and complete ownership is not technical. It's depth of ownership under maximum consequence, and no drill manufactures consequence.

This stage is almost entirely competitive exposure — deliberately seeking high-stakes situations, observing the tightening without judging it, and closing the distance between practice-shot ownership and competition-shot ownership over time. The observing matters. Most archers at this level flinch away from examining the tightening while it's happening, because examining it feels like inviting it. The ones who get past it are the ones who can look directly at the thing in real time and stay curious about it.


Two things that get mistaken for target panic

Not everything that goes wrong at full draw is panic. Two impostors deserve naming, because treating either one as a psychological problem wastes months.

The shaky pin that is actually a strength problem

The archer has been told they have target panic. They've been doing mental work for a season. Their pin still shakes. What nobody has asked them is what their holding weight is, or whether the shake is worse on the second day of a tournament, or whether it's there at blank bale — and if anyone had asked, the answers would have redirected the entire year.

A pin that trembles, wobbles, or drifts unpredictably gets read as panic constantly. Sometimes it is. Frequently it isn't.

An overbowed archer — one drawing more weight than they can hold in a stable structure for the duration of a shot — will have a shaking pin, and no quantity of psychological work will stop it. The same holds for high holding weight, a stabilizer setup that's fighting the archer, a draw length long enough to compromise back-tension structure, or plain fatigue at the end of a long session.

The discrimination is straightforward and hardly anyone runs it:

Does the shake improve substantially after dropping 8–10 lb of draw weight? That's physical.

Is it worse at the end of a session than the start, and worse on day two of a tournament than day one? Physical. Panic doesn't follow a fatigue curve. Muscle does.

Is it present at blank bale with no target? If the tremor is identical facing a blank bale, it's very unlikely to be a conditioned response to aiming, because the conditioning cue isn't present.

Does it appear only as the pin nears center, and vanish when the pin is off-target? That is not strength. Muscles have no idea where the pin is pointed. That is a pairing.

That last test is the sharpest one available, and it's worth stating as a principle: a physical limitation does not care where the archer is aiming. A conditioned response is defined by caring.

The stakes on getting this wrong are high in both directions. An archer with a strength problem who is told they have target panic will spend months on psychological retraining that cannot possibly work, and will conclude they're one of the hopeless cases. An archer with genuine panic who is told to just get stronger will grind through a training block that also cannot work. Both outcomes are common. Both are avoidable with one honest afternoon.

And the two coexist far more often than either camp admits. Physical instability creates uncertainty about the shot, uncertainty raises arousal, and elevated arousal is exactly the substrate anticipation builds itself on. The pin shakes because the bow is too heavy; the shake makes the shot feel unreliable; the unreliability recruits anxiety; the anxiety lays down a conditioned response that then persists happily after the draw weight gets fixed. Sort the physical layer first — not because it's always the answer, but because it's cheap to test and it removes a variable from everything downstream.

Vision, light, and the pin that cannot be held

Less discussed and worth ruling out: some float problems are optical.

Insufficient light on the target, a peep too small for the conditions, uncorrected astigmatism, scope magnification beyond what the archer's steadiness supports, or a fiber pin blooming in bright sun can each produce an aiming experience that feels exactly like an inability to settle. The archer reports I can't hold on the middle, which is phonetically identical to a panic complaint and mechanically unrelated to one.

The quick test: does the problem change substantially between an indoor range under consistent artificial light and bright outdoor conditions? Between morning and evening? Between a magnified scope and a plain pin? If yes, some fraction of what's being called panic is optics — and optics are dramatically easier to fix than conditioning.


What the research supports, and what it doesn't

An article like this owes the reader an honest accounting of where the evidence is solid and where it thins out.

On solid ground: The yips are real, common, and cross-sport, with prevalence in precision sports running from roughly 17% to 54% depending on definition and sampling. There are at least two distinct presentations — the Type I dystonic pattern of jerks and spasms, and the Type II psychological pattern of freezing and overcontrol — and that distinction, from Smith's continuum model onward, is the single most practically useful finding in the entire literature. Skill-focused attention degrades automated performance; Beilock's choking research and Wulf's constrained-action work are among the more replicated findings in motor learning. Performance anxiety is deeply implicated, though at least one study concluded it is not a sole cause. And behavioral retraining can produce measurable cortical reorganization, as Candia's magnetoencephalography work with dystonic musicians demonstrated.

On thin ice: The nine archetypes above are not validated categories. No study has tested whether archers sort into these groups, whether the groupings stay stable over time, or whether archetype-matched interventions beat generic ones. They are a structured hypothesis. Archery-specific intervention evidence is close to nonexistent — blank bale protocols, surprise-release retraining, specific drill sequences, essentially the entire practical apparatus the sport uses with confidence, has no controlled evidence behind it in archery. It's inherited from coaching lineage and cross-sport analogy. It may well work. It has not been tested. The claim that surprise shooting worsens freeze is likewise a structural argument rather than a measured one: it follows from what the two methods do with timing authority and it fits what the Type I/II literature implies, but nobody has run the study. And archery-specific prevalence rests almost entirely on a single sample of 69 archers, which is not a robust foundation for statements about a whole sport.

One further caution worth stating, because the paper is recent and gets cited: a 2025 investigation into yips etiology in golf reported some striking negative associations — with fever, sore throat, and prior physical trauma — on a sample of 14 participants, 4 of whom had the yips. At that size those findings are almost certainly noise, and they shouldn't be leaned on by anyone.

Genuinely unknown: Whether target panic is ever fully cured or only ever managed. Whether early intervention changes long-term prognosis. Whether the developmental sequence implied here — Puncher to Twitcher, anticipation to freeze — is a real progression or an artifact of how careers get narrated backwards. Whether archers who recover differ from those who don't in any measurable way, or whether it reduces to persistence and luck.

An honest article says these things. The alternative is a confident story, and the sport has no shortage of those.


Now what

For the archer who recognized themselves somewhere above, here is the shortest useful version of what to do about it.

Name it specifically, out loud. Not "I have target panic." Something closer to: I have a conditioned pairing between the sight picture crossing center and the command to fire, and it's worst past thirty yards. The specific version identifies which drills apply. The vague version leads to doing whatever the internet suggested most recently.

Check the physical layer first. Drop draw weight substantially for two weeks. Test the pin at blank bale. Check whether the problem tracks fatigue and light. Cheap, fast, and it eliminates a variable that otherwise contaminates every conclusion downstream.

Determine direction — early or late. Does the shot fire before it's authorized, or fail to fire when it is? This single question routes toward opposite treatments, and it's the question most often skipped. Getting it wrong isn't neutral. It costs seasons.

Pick one lane and stay in it past the discomfort. Whatever gets chosen, the first stretch will feel worse than whatever preceded it. That isn't evidence of a wrong turn. It's the cost of removing a compensation, and the Fugitive is defined precisely by treating that discomfort as a signal to change again.

Change what gets measured. During retraining, score is a lagging and demoralizing indicator. Measure shot ownership instead: did I own that one, yes or no. Count the yeses. That number moves first, and it's the one that predicts the other.

Get another set of eyes, and film it. Nearly every archetype here involves a mismatch between what the archer feels and what actually occurs. Slow-motion video and an honest observer close that gap faster than introspection can, because introspection is the exact faculty the condition has compromised.

Expect it to take longer and be less linear than anyone wants. Weeks and months, not days, with regressions along the way. The archers who come out the other side are not the ones with better methods. They're the ones who stayed with a correct method long enough for it to do its work.


One last thing, for the archer who read the Sticky section and went quiet.

That version is the frightening one, and finding it frightening is not weakness. What happens in that moment is a structural failure in a chain of command inside the nervous system — not a failure of character, not insufficient toughness, not evidence of wanting it less than the person on the next bale. It responds to the right work and it does not respond to trying harder. Anyone who has spent a year trying harder and getting worse has been running the experiment the literature would have predicted the result of.

Find someone who understands the difference between a shot that fires too early and a shot that won't fire at all. That distinction is the whole game, and most of the sport has never heard of it.
