Yes, a 290 on a Vegas face is a good score. It is above average for a compound archer shooting in a league, significantly above average for most recreational bowhunters, and places you solidly in what the NFAA classifies as "Class A" territory — the upper portion of it. It is not a pro score, but it is not a beginner score either. Not even close.
The longer answer depends on your equipment, whether you're talking about practice or competition, and what population you're comparing yourself against. This article answers all of that with actual data.
First: what score are we actually talking about?
Before anything else, be honest about which number you're asking about. There are two very different scores an archer carries around:
- Your personal best. The one time everything went right. The round you remember and mention. Not irrelevant — but not what defines your level.
- Your consistent score. What you shoot on a normal session, on a normal day, when nothing is exceptional. This is your actual level.
This article is about the second number. Shooting a 300 once and shooting 280s the rest of the time makes you a 280-shooter who has had one great day. That's not a knock — a 280 is a solid score. But calling yourself a 300-shooter based on one round is like a golfer claiming a scratch handicap because they once parred every hole. The handicap is the average, not the highlight reel.
Your consistent score is the number you'd bet money on hitting in a round that matters next week. It's what you average over your last ten sessions, not the peak of the last hundred. That's the number to find your place in the bell curve below — and it's the number that actually answers the question am I a good archer?
If you don't know your consistent score because you don't keep score at practice — start now. The Vegas face gives you 30 arrows of precise, immediate feedback every session. Not using it to score is leaving the most useful data point in archery on the table.
What the Vegas 300 round actually is
The NFAA Vegas 300 round is 30 arrows at 20 yards on a Vegas face — a 40cm target with rings scoring X, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, and 5 from center out. Three arrows per end, 10 ends. Maximum score: 300 (30 arrows × 10 points each). X-count is tracked separately but does not affect the 300-point total; it exists only as a tiebreaker.
The 10-ring on a Vegas face is 40mm in diameter — about 1.57 inches. The X-ring inside it is 20mm — roughly 0.79 inches, exactly half the diameter of the 10-ring. At 20 yards with a modern compound, keeping every arrow within that 1.57-inch circle is achievable — but it is not automatic. The Vegas face is demanding in precision, not in distance estimation — there's no ranging, no angle compensation, no wind. What remains is the archer, the equipment, and a 10-ring roughly the size of a golf ball.
The round is also used in three-round format at the World Archery Festival in Las Vegas (30 arrows × 3 rounds = 900 total), which is a different performance context — more on that later.

There's no publicly published large-sample dataset of Vegas 300 round scores across all archer categories, but league records, forum discussions, and NFAA classification cutoffs give a consistent picture. Think of the distribution as a bell curve shifted toward the lower end — not a symmetrical bell. The biggest cluster of compound league shooters sits roughly between 268 and 284. Scores above 290 represent a noticeable step up. A consistent 290 places you in approximately the top 20–25% of active compound shooters in league and local tournament settings.

Real league data as a reference point
Documented league discussions on the major archery forums paint a consistent picture:
- In one competitive league, the top average was 296; "most of the better shooters" shot in the mid-280s; a few reached the low 290s regularly; only two archers averaged in the mid-290s
- A 292 described as "way above average" by a league shooter with a 296 average — putting 292 near the top of the room, not in the middle
- A first-time Vegas face shooter who had been shooting 300 on a 5-spot noted difficulty adapting to the Vegas face — the faces are not equivalent, and the Vegas face plays harder for many archers
- Multiple sources cite a 5–10 point drop from practice to competition as the normal expectation — meaning a 290 in practice is not the same accomplishment as a 290 in a tournament setting
To shoot a 290 across 10 ends of 3 arrows, you need to average 29 per end — roughly 20 tens and 10 nines over the round, or one nine per end as your budget. An 8 costs two points of runway instead of one. There's no catching up.
Score meaning — by level, in plain language
Under 260: Early stages
Arrows landing all over the face — 8s, 7s, lower, the occasional miss. Form or equipment is the constraint, often both. Scores in this range respond quickly to mechanical fixes: anchor consistency, release, tuning. The Vegas face gives immediate feedback for small improvements.
260–272: Getting consistent
Finding the yellow more often but lower-ring hits are still a regular part of the round. Shot-to-shot consistency is the main gap. Equipment starts to matter here.
272–282: The broad middle
Most archers who practice regularly live here. The 10-ring is reachable but the round still has real variation — a mix of scoring rings per end, with the occasional low hit when something breaks. Getting past 282 usually means addressing consistency and equipment together.
282–290: Genuinely good
All 9s and 10s. An 8 is an error. This is the ceiling for most compound archers who don't train specifically for target shooting. Breaking out of this range requires real mental game work, not just more arrows.
290–295: Above average and earned
A 290 is not a casual score. The round is clean — 9s and 10s throughout, no low hits, no margin. In most indoor leagues, a 290 shooter is at or near the top of the field. The jump from the mid-280s to 290 is one of the hardest stretches in the sport.
295–299: Competitive elite
A level most archers never reach regardless of years shooting. Nearly all tens, round after round, under real pressure. Consistent scores here require a serious mental game built alongside solid form.
300 with X-count: Where the real competition begins
A perfect 300 is meaningful — and at the Vegas Shoot, it's table stakes, not a finish line. At the 2024 Vegas Shoot, 118 archers posted perfect 300s on the first scoring day. Among the 73 in Championship Compound Open, the competition moved entirely to X-count. A perfect 300 at that level still required 25–30 Xs to be competitive for the championship. A 300 with 15X at the Vegas Shoot is a great round and a bad placement.
Years don't make you better. Arrows and knowledge do.
One of the most repeated claims in archery communities is some version of: "It takes 3–5 years to really get good." This is worth examining, because it's partly true and mostly misleading — and it causes real harm by giving archers a built-in excuse to plateau.
Years of experience are a proxy for arrow count and accumulated knowledge. They are a poor proxy. A casual archer who shoots 20 arrows on a Sunday afternoon once a month will accumulate 10 years of experience and 2,400 arrows. A focused archer who shoots 100 arrows six days a week accumulates the same arrow count in 40 days. Their scores will not be close. Time didn't separate them. Arrows and attention did.
But there's a second problem with raw arrow count: it only helps if the form behind those arrows is sound. 2,400 arrows shot with a collapsing draw arm, an inconsistent anchor, or a flinching release do not build a better shot. They build a more ingrained bad shot. Repetition is powerful in exactly the wrong direction when the pattern being repeated is wrong. The archer who shoots 300 arrows a week with poor form and no feedback will, after a year, be a very consistent poor-form archer. Perfect practice makes perfect. Imperfect practice makes imperfect permanent.
Compound archery specifically compresses the timeline in ways recurve does not. A compound bow with a well-set draw length, a consistent release aid, and a properly tuned rest removes several variables that recurve archers spend years learning to manage manually — holding weight, bow arm torque, the absence of let-off. A new compound archer with good coaching and honest volume can reach scores that a recurve archer genuinely does need years to approach. This is not a knock on recurve. It is a mechanical fact about what the equipment does for you.
The "4–5 years to be competitive" framing you'll see in recurve circles reflects that discipline's specific demands: the physical conditioning to hold a 40+ lb bow steady at full draw with no let-off, the blank-bale form work, the slow deliberate development of a shot that has fewer mechanical guardrails. That timeline is real for recurve. Importing it wholesale into compound archery produces bad expectations in both directions — discouraging newer compound archers who are ahead of the curve, and letting others use "I've only been shooting two years" as a reason not to address fixable problems.
What actually determines how fast you improve:
- Arrow volume with correct form. Repetition builds the motor pattern — but it builds whatever pattern you're repeating, good or bad. Shooting 200 arrows with a collapsing draw arm doesn't build toward 290; it makes the collapse more consistent. Identify the flaw first, fix it with lower volume and deliberate attention, then build the volume back up on top of a correct pattern. Arrow count matters. Arrow quality matters more. A session of 30 focused, correctly-executed arrows beats a session of 150 arrows on autopilot.
- Honest feedback. Coaching, video review, data tracking, and — most importantly on the Vegas face — keeping score every single session. Archers who don't score their practice don't know what they're fixing. The Vegas face gives you immediate, unambiguous feedback on every arrow. Use it.
- Pressure exposure. League shooting, local tournaments, and even structured practice games that attach consequence to individual arrows develop the mental game faster than any amount of low-stakes solo practice. The gap between practice scores and competition scores narrows in proportion to how often you put yourself under pressure.
- Equipment understanding. Knowing why your bow is tuned the way it is — not just that it shoots where you point it — lets you diagnose problems instead of guessing. An archer who understands their equipment can fix a problem in a session that another archer spends months working around.
The score bands in this article describe what a given level of shooting looks like. They are not a schedule. There is no rule that says you have to spend any particular amount of time in a band before moving up. Some archers shoot their way through the intermediate range in months. Others spend years there. The difference is almost never the calendar.

Equipment matters to Vegas scores, but probably less than most recreational archers expect. The score differences between NFAA equipment classes are real but modest compared to the differences created by form, consistency, and mental game. A better sight won't fix a breaking-down release.
NFAA shooting styles for compound archers
Freestyle Open (FS) is the unrestricted class. Magnified scope sight, long front stabilizer (typically 28–36"), V-bars and side rods, any legal rest. No restrictions beyond basic bow legality. This class has the highest ceiling and the most gear.
Bowhunter Freestyle (BHFS) limits sights to a maximum of five fixed reference points — no scope magnification, no scopes, no clickers. Stabilizer maximum is 12" from the riser. The scope advantage — what it's actually worth
A magnified scope sight — typically a 6x or 8x lens with a fine reticle dot — offers two specific advantages over a fixed pin:
- A smaller visual reference point. A well-chosen scope dot is finer than any pin and allows more precise centering on the target. A pin large enough to see clearly at 20 yards visually covers the entire X-ring and part of the 10-ring. A scope reticle sits inside the ring visually rather than on top of it.
- Better sight picture under varied lighting. Scopes with illuminated or fiber-optic dots maintain a sharper reference across different indoor lighting conditions that can wash out pin tips.
Practical score impact in the hands of an intermediate shooter: roughly 3–8 points compared to a fixed pin, depending on form maturity. For beginners, the scope makes almost no difference — form is the constraint, not the sight. For an archer already at 285–290, switching to a scope may unlock the next 3–5 points. For someone at 270, it won't. The scope makes a precise shot more precise; it doesn't create precision that isn't there.
What stabilizers are actually worth
Stabilizers reduce how much your bow moves while you're aiming and in the critical frames immediately after the shot. They do this through two mechanisms: added mass (which slows oscillation of your bow arm) and a longer moment arm (which resists rotational torque from the release).

- No stabilizer → basic 6–8" front bar: Roughly 4–7 points for archers in the 268–282 range. At this level, aim scatter is significant and the mass reduction is immediately measurable in group size.
- Short hunting stabilizer (6–8") → target front bar (28–36") + side rods/V-bars: Roughly 2–5 points. The longer bar and side rod system dramatically reduces torque from the release and lateral sway. More impactful the more consistent your form already is.
- Adding more weight than you're conditioned for: Can actually hurt scores. Fatigue accumulates over a 30-arrow round. If your bow arm is tired by end 8, your last few arrows suffer. More mass does not automatically mean more points — it means more points only if you can maintain the arm strength to hold it steady through the round.
The general principle: stabilizers compress your groups. They do not fix an inconsistent anchor, a broken-down release, or a wandering bow arm. The benefit is real but form-conditional.
An estimate of ~5 points from a full stabilizer system is in the right neighborhood — a reasonable practical figure for a competent intermediate archer moving from a basic setup to a proper target rig. Some shooters pick up more, some less, depending on where their form weaknesses lie.
NFAA classification — the official score ladder
The NFAA historically used a class-based system for state and regional tournaments. Some state associations still use it actively. The cutoffs for the 300 round are roughly as follows (verify with your state chapter — they can vary):

What's a good score on other formats?
The Vegas 300 round is the most commonly discussed indoor compound format, but three others come up regularly: the NFAA 5-spot, the USA Archery indoor round (WA 18m), and the USA Archery 50m outdoor round. The score benchmarks below are estimates based on observed competition results — there is no large published dataset for any of these formats, just the same mix of league records, forum reporting, and classification data used for the Vegas section above.
NFAA 5-spot (blue face) — max 300
The round: 60 arrows at 20 yards. Twelve ends of five arrows, one arrow per spot. The face has five circular targets arranged in an X-pattern. Each spot scores X (5 points, tiebreaker only), 5, or 4. Maximum: 300 + 60X.
The 5-ring on each spot is roughly 83mm in diameter — more than twice the width of the Vegas 10-ring. Hitting the 5 is considerably easier than hitting the Vegas 10; a 4 represents a genuine form failure rather than a near-miss. Because of this, 5-spot scores run higher than Vegas scores for the same archer across most of the distribution — typically 5–12 points higher. The competition at the top collapses into X-count well before it does on Vegas, because perfect 300s are more common.

USA Archery Indoor / WA 18m — max 600
The round: 60 arrows at 18 meters (just under 20 yards). Ten ends of six arrows, or 20 ends of three arrows on the 3-spot face. 10-zone scoring — 10 through 1 — with X inner as tiebreaker. Maximum: 600 + 60X.
The 10-ring on the 40cm face is 40mm in diameter — the same physical size as the Vegas 10-ring, at nearly the same distance, but shot for 60 arrows with a 10-zone scoring system that runs from 10 down to 1. A 9 costs one point, same as Vegas. An 8 costs two. The round is longer, the scoring is harsher on anything below 9, and the maximum is 600, not 300 — so context matters when comparing raw numbers.
The 3-spot variant (one arrow per spot per end, inner rings only) is common in compound competition to avoid arrow damage at high scores. Same distance, same max, same difficulty.

USA Archery 50m (outdoor compound) — max 720
The round: 72 arrows at 50 meters. Twelve ends of six arrows. Target: 80cm face, 10-zone scoring. Maximum: 720 + 72X.
50 meters is the standard WA competition distance for compound archers (recurve shoots 70m). The 10-ring on the 80cm face is 80mm in diameter — twice as wide as the Vegas 10-ring, but at roughly 2.7 times the distance. Angularly it is a smaller target than the Vegas 10-ring. Add wind, outdoor light variation, and a 72-arrow round that takes substantially longer than an indoor session, and the 50m round demands a different kind of consistency than indoor shooting does.
A good score is 650 or higher — that averages over 9 points per arrow. Scores above 680 are very competitive, and elite international archers push past 700 toward the 720 maximum. Benchmarks below apply to compound with release aid.

There's a consistent and well-documented gap between what archers shoot in practice and what they shoot in competition. For most compound archers, that gap is 5 to 10 points. For archers new to tournament shooting, or shooting a large event for the first time, it can reach 15–20 points.
What causes it:
- Elevated arousal. The stress response tightens muscles, accelerates thought, and degrades fine motor control — exactly what precision aiming at 20 yards requires. Even minimal competitive stress produces measurable changes in arm steadiness and release timing.
- Score awareness. Knowing your running total is a documented performance degrader. The archer who knows they're at 287 entering the last two ends shoots differently than the one who doesn't. The "protect the number" psychology tightens the shot and costs points.
- Environmental novelty. Different lighting, different target holders, strangers on either side of you, time pressure. Every unfamiliar input carries a small performance cost.
- Fatigue management. Tournament shooting involves more standing, more mental focus expenditure per arrow, and less ability to take breaks. The last 10 arrows of a round often show the wear of the first 20.
The practical translation: if you shoot 290 in practice, expect 282–287 in competition until tournament shooting becomes familiar. A consistent 290 under actual competition conditions is a meaningfully different — and harder — accomplishment than a practice 290. The bowhunter's perspective
Bowhunters who pick up a Vegas round for the first time are often surprised to discover their field-accurate setups score lower than they expected. A hunter who regularly makes 40-yard shots on game, with a hunting arrow and a multi-pin hunting sight, may shoot 262–278 in their first Vegas round — not because they can't shoot, but because the Vegas face demands a precision that field archery doesn't specifically train for.
A few equipment-specific factors for the bowhunter:
- Arrow diameter. Larger-diameter hunting arrows (27/64", sometimes larger) can rescue line-cutters that a slim target shaft would score as a 9. That said, fat arrows are also heavier and group slightly differently than target shafts — it's not a free 5 points.
- Peep aperture size. Hunting peeps are typically large-bore for low-light field use. A smaller peep at 20 yards indoors sharpens the sight picture meaningfully and reduces pin float.
- Sight clarity. Hunting sights are built for dawn/dusk aiming at game silhouettes. A target pin with a small, bright fiber tip — or a scope dot — offers a considerably sharper reference at indoor distances.
A bowhunter who scores 270 is not "bad." They're shooting a hunting rig at a target round it wasn't designed for. That same archer with a tuned BHFS setup — fixed pins, short stabilizer — might shoot 282. The same archer with a few weeks of target practice on top of that might shoot 286.
When does X-count actually matter?
X-count is the number of arrows landing in the X-ring — the innermost circle at 0.75 inches in diameter. It does not add to your score. An X and a 10 are both worth 10 points. X-count exists solely as a tiebreaker when two archers shoot the same total.

The competitive context — where your score fits
It's worth separating "the Vegas 300 round" from "the Vegas Shoot" — they're not the same thing. The Vegas Shoot is an invitation event that attracts the best archers in the world. Scoring context there is extremely compressed:
- To be competitive in Championship Compound Open, you essentially need to shoot 300 every round

If you're preparing for the actual Vegas Shoot, 295+ in competition is the floor to be meaningfully competitive. If you're shooting local leagues and state tournaments, a 290 puts you near the top of most fields. These are different conversations.

Use your consistent score when reading these — not your personal best, not your worst day. The round you could bet on hitting next Tuesday. That's the number that places you honestly.
"I shot 268 on my first Vegas round." Yes, you're off to a good start. A first attempt in the intermediate range shows your fundamentals are in place. Keep score every session from here and you'll know quickly whether 268 is your floor or your ceiling.
"I consistently shoot 280–285." You're a good archer — above average in most league contexts. The gap between 285 and 290 is specifically about eliminating individual 9s: shot routine, mental game, consistency under mild pressure. Form at this level is rarely the problem. Time at the line is.
"I shoot 290 consistently in competition." You're in the top 20–25% of active indoor compound shooters. Class A in NFAA terms. A consistent 290 under pressure is genuinely difficult — most archers never reach it regardless of how long they've shot. It's earned. Now go find your Xs.
"I've shot 290 once but I usually shoot around 283." You're a 283-shooter who had a great day. That one round tells you 290 is reachable — which is useful — but your level is 283. Train to 283 becoming 287 consistently, not to repeating the 290 fluke.
"I need to know if 295 is enough to be competitive at the actual Vegas Shoot." At the Vegas Shoot itself, 295 puts you near the bottom of the Championship Open field. You'll qualify, you'll have fun, you'll meet great people — but you'll need 300s to move into championship contention. And that needs to be a consistent 300, not a once-in-a-season round. The top of that event is a different sport from the one most archers practice.
