The pin holds low
You come to full draw. The pin rises. It gets to the bottom of the X — and stops. You shoot from there. You have done this so many times it feels like aiming. It is not aiming. Here is what to do about it.

Two versions of the same problem
The first version is quiet. You draw back, the pin rises to the bottom of the X, and it stays there. Not because your arm fails — it just stops. You wait a moment. You decide that's close enough. You send it.
This is not a bad shot to the archer who makes it. It feels repeatable. It feels controlled. It is not. You have trained yourself to shoot when the pin is low, and your brain now treats "pin at the bottom of the X" as the firing condition. You are not aiming. You are responding to a trigger you set for yourself.
The second version is the drive-by. The pin approaches the X and — rather than dwelling — you sweep through it and fire. Sitting on the X is unbearable, so you don't. You move fast enough that it doesn't count as aiming at the X. You fire somewhere in the vicinity of it and call that a shot.
Different presentations. Same cause.
What is actually happening
The shot has become aim-triggered. Your pin position is the signal to fire, and your body has decided that low is the signal. The X carries pressure — it means you have to commit, hold, and execute — so the nervous system avoids it. Either by stopping just short, or by not letting you stay there long enough for the pressure to register.
The instinct is to try harder. Push the pin up. Concentrate. This makes the problem worse. You are adding conscious attention to exactly the moment the brain is already refusing to cooperate with. The more you focus on where the pin is, the more the shot is about the pin, and the more the trigger tightens.
This is not a grip problem. Not a draw length problem. Not a rest height problem. People change all of those. None of it helps, because none of it is the problem.
What the community tells you to do
Go to the blank bale. Learn your shot process without the target in front of you. Close the distance until you cannot miss — no stakes, no stress — then walk it back out.
These are not wrong. Blank bale genuinely teaches what a process-triggered shot feels like. Close distance builds the muscle memory of executing without anxiety. They have real value.
The limitation is that they require you to leave the target environment. When you return to the target, you return to the trigger. The work does not always transfer. You are a different person at the blank bale than you are staring at an X at thirty meters.
Here are methods that work at the target.
Method 1: Never fire the first time the pin hits the X
Make a rule. When the pin arrives at the X for the first time in a shot, you do not fire. You cross through it. You go somewhere else. You come back. Then you fire.
This sounds like a small thing. It is not a small thing.
"Pin at X → fire" is the trigger you trained. You are breaking it by adding a mandatory gap between "pin arrives at X" and "shot fires." The X stops being a launch signal and becomes a waypoint — somewhere the pin passes through, not somewhere it has to do something.
The rule feels artificial at first. Keep it. Do it until you can sit on the X without the nervous system treating it like a countdown clock. At that point you do not need the rule anymore, because the trigger is no longer there.
Method 2: Pick somewhere else and hit it
The X has pressure attached to it. Other parts of the target do not.
Pick a spot — 10 o'clock on the 8-ring, or the very bottom edge of the 10, or any precise location that is not the center — and aim for it deliberately. Not as a workaround. As the actual target for this shot.
Something is going to happen: your arm is going to work. The pin is going to go where you tell it. You will discover the problem was never physical. The bow does not have opinions about 10 o'clock on the 8-ring. It only has opinions about the X, because you gave it those opinions.
Once you have proven to yourself that the hardware works, move the target. Start closer to center. The pressure has not attached itself to 10 o'clock on the 8-ring. Use that.
Method 3: Shoot a bad arrow on purpose
Let the shot fire from back tension. Not from "the pin is in position." Not from "now feels right." From back tension reaching threshold — the same way every correct shot is supposed to fire.
If the pin is at 6 o'clock when the threshold is reached, the arrow goes to 6 o'clock. That is honest feedback. It tells you exactly where your hold actually is, which is information you need and have been avoiding.
You cannot fix the hold by chasing the hold. Watching the pin and willing it onto the X adds conscious attention to the one thing your nervous system is already refusing to cooperate with. Let the process fire the shot. Let the arrow land where it lands.
This feels like giving up. It is not giving up. It is the only method that puts accurate feedback in front of you instead of hiding the problem behind compensations.
One more thing: look at the target, not the arrow
There is a thing people say in archery — focus on a great execution, not a great shot. It is usually said to encourage a surprise release. It has another use here.
If you are shooting with a correct process and the arrows are landing in the 6-ring, there are two possible explanations. The first is that your process is wrong. The second is that your sight is off.
A lot of archers assume it is the first. They adjust their form. They change their timing. They tinker with the shot until the arrows move, and then they assume the process improved.
It might just be the sight.
When you commit to a correct process and accept the arrow where it lands, you get honest information. Consistent pattern low-left with a correct process: that is a sight adjustment. A solved problem. Not a mental game failure — a mechanical note. Move the sight, shoot again, see what happens.
Keep aiming for the X. Let the arrow hit the 6-ring. Shoot correctly. When you have a consistent pattern somewhere other than center, figure out whether it is the process or the sight before you assume it is the process. The bow is often just not sighted in correctly, and you have been chasing a psychological problem that was actually a half-turn of the elevation screw.
What these methods have in common
They all produce imperfect arrows. That is not a side effect — that is how they work. You are accepting imperfect arrows in exchange for a correct shot process. Once the process is correct, the arrows find the middle.
It does not feel like improvement. It looks like getting worse. The score goes down. The arrows scatter. Your coach, if you have one, is going to have thoughts.
Do it anyway. The imperfect arrows are the treatment, not the problem. When you understand that, you are already halfway done.
