The new enemy
At indoor distances, your enemy is your form. You miss Xs at 18 meters because you are doing something wrong, and the solution is to stop doing it. Straightforward. Demoralizing, but straightforward.
At 120 yards, your form is still your enemy — it did not retire — but now the wind has also shown up and it has no interest in being reasonable about it. A 5 mph crosswind at 120 yards moves a standard compound arrow four to six inches. A 10 mph wind at 90 meters can move it close to a foot. The wind does not care that you spent three months working on your back tension. It pushes on your arrow and the arrow goes where it is pushed, and that is the entire relationship.
Everything that follows is organized around this problem. Arrow diameter, total weight, FOC, and point weight all interact with each other, but they interact primarily through how they deal with wind. Get the wind variable right and you have a setup worth tuning. Ignore it and you will spend a lot of quality time reading the wind flags and blaming your release.
Diameter — smaller, always, no exceptions, stop asking
Wind pushes on what it can see. A larger-diameter arrow presents more cross-sectional area, catches more force, and drifts further. This is not subtle. The difference between a 9mm indoor shaft and a 4mm outdoor shaft in the same 8 mph crosswind at 120 yards is not a discussion — it is several inches. The physics are not interested in compromise.
The practical floor is set by spine requirements: your arrow has to be stiff enough to handle your draw weight and draw length cleanly. Within that constraint, go as small as possible. For serious outdoor compound shooting, 4mm (X10 class) and 5mm (ACE class) are standard. Running a 6mm or larger shaft at 120 yards in any meaningful wind is essentially a charitable donation to the archers next to you, who are shooting skinnier arrows and drifting less.
The diameter advantage also compounds with distance. At 20 yards the difference between a 4mm and a 6mm shaft in moderate wind is maybe an inch. At 120 yards it is several inches. If you are shooting your indoor setup outdoors because you only want to own one set of arrows, you are paying a wind tax on every yard beyond about 40, and the wind is collecting on schedule.
Point weight — yes, go heavier at distance. No, not 100 grains.
This is the question most archers ask and few get a direct answer to. The answer is: if you are still running 100 grain points at 90 meters, you are probably leaving stability on the table. Here is why.
Point weight does two things simultaneously. It increases total arrow weight, which makes your trajectory arc more dramatic and your sight tape more exciting. And it increases FOC — the percentage by which the balance point sits forward of the arrow's midpoint. That second effect is what you are actually buying at long distance.
At 18 meters indoors, 100 grain points are correct. The arrow flies a short distance, wind is a rumor, and extra FOC doesn't add much. At 90 meters outdoors, the arrow is in the air significantly longer, passing through real wind, and the stability benefits of higher FOC start to compound over that flight time. Most serious outdoor compound archers run 120 to 150 grain points at distance — not for the weight, but for the FOC it produces. The arrow flies more predictably. It recovers from perturbations better. It arrives more consistently.
The trajectory cost is real. Heavier point means more drop. Your sight tape handles this. What a heavier point buys you — better stability, better wind behavior — cannot be dialed in on a sight tape. It either happens in the arrow or it doesn't.
If you are shooting 100 grain points at 120 yards and wondering why your groups are inconsistent in variable wind, trying 120 or 130 grain is not exotic. It is the first thing to try.
FOC — the reason darts fly straight
FOC is front of center: how far forward of the midpoint your arrow's balance point sits, expressed as a percentage. A dart is high FOC. A shuttlecock is comically high FOC. They fly point-first through everything because the mass leads the drag, and physics rewards that arrangement.
An arrow with adequate FOC self-corrects when disturbed. A gust hits, the tail catches the offset airflow, the arrow rotates back into alignment, and it continues on its way as if nothing happened. An arrow with low FOC is more likely to stay perturbed — the disturbance doesn't get corrected, it gets carried. At indoor distances, a small wobble has very little time to express itself as horizontal deviation on the face. At 120 yards, it has a lot of time. More FOC is better at distance, and the easiest way to add it without changing shafts is a heavier point.
Target range for outdoor compound: 14–18% FOC. Below 12% and you are undershooting the front weight for this distance. Above 20% and you need to be more careful about spine — the extra front mass stresses the shaft's bending characteristics differently and your tune may need revisiting. Calculate your actual FOC with your specific setup: shaft, insert, point, nock, and vanes all in the number.
Total arrow weight — the coin versus the poker chip
Flip a heavy coin and a poker chip into a breeze. The coin lands closer to your feet. Same size, different mass — the coin has more momentum behind the same wind force, so the wind moves it proportionally less. This is sectional density doing its job, and it applies to arrows.
A heavier arrow, at the same diameter, resists lateral wind push better than a lighter one. It also drops more, which means your sight tape needs more range and a ranging error costs you more vertically. That is the trade. For outdoor compound target, the working total weight range is roughly 380 to 450 grains. Below 350 you start losing sectional density in a meaningful way. Above 480 the trajectory management becomes burdensome and your speed drops enough to affect everything else.
Most competitive setups land in the 390–440 range. Heavy enough to resist wind meaningfully. Light enough to remain shootable at distance without a physics degree to manage the drop.
Your indoor arrows are the wrong tool and that's fine
Indoor target archery and outdoor target archery are optimized for different problems, and pretending otherwise is the source of a lot of unnecessary confusion.
Indoor: you want a large-diameter arrow that cuts scoring lines at close range. The wind does not exist. The scoring geometry rewards diameter. A wide field point that clips the edge of the 10-ring instead of dropping into the 9 is genuinely worth having. Your 23-series shaft earns its keep every end.
Outdoor: that same arrow is now catching wind across its entire diameter for 120 yards. Every millimeter of extra shaft is billing you on every shot. The scoring geometry rewards hitting the middle, not cutting edges, and hitting the middle requires getting there — which large-diameter arrows in a crosswind are statistically less good at.
These are two different tools. A screwdriver and a wrench are both turning tools. You would not swap them. Owning a separate outdoor dozen, set up specifically for distance and wind, is the correct answer if you shoot both formats seriously. Running one setup for both is a compromise that performs adequately at neither.
The checklist — what to actually set up
Diameter: 4mm–5mm. If you are on a larger shaft, start here. Everything else is downstream of this decision.
Point weight: 120–130gr as a starting point if you are coming from 100gr. Try 140–150gr if you want more FOC and can tolerate the additional drop in your sight tape. Most archers who make this switch for outdoor shooting do not go back.
FOC: Calculate it. Target 14–18%. If you are below 12%, you are underdoing the front weight for this distance. Add point weight.
Total weight: 380–450 grains finished. If you are significantly below 350, you are probably running an indoor-optimized setup and the wind has already noticed.
Consistency: Weigh every arrow with the point installed. Sort by total weight. Anything more than 2 grains from the median is a liability at this distance. Sort for straightness too — at 120 yards, a poorly matched arrow in a dozen announces itself loudly and repeatedly.
