Blank bailing has a well-understood purpose: remove the target, remove the result pressure, let the shot process run without the brain managing outcome. It works, but it has a limitation that is rarely named. The target is not just a result — it is a stimulus. The face, the rings, the X, the peep picture loaded with competition meaning, the specific visual context that exists when a score is on the line — all of that is gone when you bail into a blank bale. The shot process runs in an environment that does not resemble competition. Transfer is weakened by exactly the degree to which practice conditions differ from performance conditions.

The offset-sight drill resolves this. It keeps every element of the competitive visual environment in place — face, rings, X, full peep picture — while eliminating the one variable that contaminates most practice sessions: the visible result.

Setup

Mount a Vegas face on the lower portion of the bale — well below center. Then set your sight to either 40 or 60 yards depending on your bow. Shoot from Vegas distance (18 meters, approximately 20 yards). Do not adjust your form, anchor, or process. Shoot exactly as you would in competition.

The goal is arrows landing solidly above the paper — often an entire face-height or more above the top edge. Faster bows use 60 yards; slower bows use 40. Choose whichever setting puts arrows clearly and unambiguously into bare bale above the face on your equipment.

Mount the face low on the bale. Pick whichever sight setting — 40 or 60 yards — puts arrows solidly off the paper on your bow. Faster bows use 60, slower bows use 40. If anything clips the face, lower the mounting position or step to 60.

Why visible results corrupt practice

Motor learning research is unambiguous on one point that archery coaching almost universally ignores: frequent augmented feedback — external, visible result information — suppresses the development of intrinsic error-detection. Winstein and Schmidt (1990) demonstrated this cleanly: subjects who received feedback on only 50% of their practice trials consistently outperformed 100%-feedback groups on retention tests. The mechanism is not motivational. It is neurological. When external feedback is always available, the nervous system stops building the internal model that allows the archer to evaluate shot quality from feel alone. The proprioceptive system is capable and trainable. Constant result feedback renders it dormant.

Every time an archer looks at an arrow and uses it to evaluate the shot, that external signal displaces the intrinsic one. Over time the brain learns to wait for the result rather than read the execution. This creates a specific and damaging problem under competition pressure, where the archer needs the intrinsic system most and the result arrives last. The archer who has never learned to read their own shot has no feedback during the round — only after. Decisions are made blind.

Blank bailing addresses this by removing result feedback entirely. The offset-sight drill goes further. It removes result feedback while preserving the full visual environment that triggers competitive arousal: face, rings, X-ring, complete peep picture, the entire stimulus package that makes competition different from casual shooting. The motor learning literature's term for this is ecological validity — the degree to which practice conditions match performance conditions. Higher ecological validity produces better transfer. Blank bailing has low ecological validity. The offset-sight drill has nearly perfect ecological validity, because everything the archer sees in competition is present.

What the drill develops

The shot runs, the arrow goes above the paper, and the archer is left with exactly one source of information: proprioception and self-assessment. Did the process run? Was the trigger deliberate? Was the call honest? These are the three questions the drill answers, and they are the three questions that determine competitive performance. Not where the arrow landed. What the archer did.

Target panic in its anxiety-based form — classified as Type II yips in the sports psychology literature — operates through a specific mechanism. The brain anticipates a visible, evaluable result and recruits executive function to manage it. That recruitment interrupts automated sequences, firing anticipatory responses before the shot is complete. This is the flinch, the drive-by, the freeze at the trigger. The disruption is not irrational. The brain is correctly identifying that a result is about to arrive and that the result matters. Removing the visible result removes the trigger. No outcome to anticipate means no anticipatory disruption. The offset-sight drill does not teach the archer to suppress anxiety. It removes the stimulus that generates it.

The second thing the drill develops is honest self-assessment. An archer who practices exclusively with result feedback learns to use arrows as a crutch: they do not know whether the shot was good until they see the arrow. Asked to rate a shot before looking, they hedge. Over time this means the archer has no reliable internal model of what a good shot feels like independent of result. The offset-sight drill forces that model to exist. After thirty arrows in bare bale above an untouched Vegas face, the archer either has a calibrated sense of what their process produces, or they discover they do not — which is also useful information.

The 300 round by feel

The most diagnostic application of this drill is shooting a full 300 round on called scores alone. Thirty arrows, ten points available each. After every shot, before moving, call the ring: X, 10, 9, 8. Record it. Do not look at where the arrow landed — in this drill, it is in the bale above the paper and tells you nothing useful anyway. At the end of thirty arrows, total the called scores. That number is your self-assessed 300-round score.

Now compare it to your actual mode score from recent competition or practice scoring. The gap between the two is specific information.

If the called score is significantly higher than your real score, result contamination is costing you points in actual rounds. The gap is the measure of how much anticipation, flinch, and outcome management are degrading execution at the moment of the break. A called 285 with a real mode of 265 is a 20-point contamination cost. That is not a form problem, a tuning problem, or an equipment problem. It is a process problem — specifically, a problem with the shot running cleanly when a result is visible.

If the called score roughly matches the real score, one of two things is true: either the process is clean under pressure and the score reflects genuine execution quality, or the archer is accurately self-assessing at a level below potential. Distinguishing between those requires additional data — specifically, comparing the called round to a blank bail round where no arousal is present. If the blank bail score (by feel) is substantially better than both the called score and the real score, the remaining gap is arousal-dependent execution loss that requires competitive exposure to address.

If the called score is lower than the real score, the archer is underestimating their own execution. Lucky results are inflating the real score. This is the subtler and more dangerous case: the archer believes their process is worse than the results suggest, which creates confusing signals when scores drop — is the process worse, or are the results reverting to what the process actually produces? The called round answers that question before scores start dropping.

Clean faces — a tournament condition practice rarely replicates

In competition, you aim at a face with no prior holes in the scoring area. The X is clean. The rings are clean. The visual reference is exactly what the target manufacturer printed. In practice, that condition disappears after the first end. By the third or fourth end on the same face, the 10-ring is a cluster of holes, the X has been punched through multiple times, and the visual reference the archer is aiming at looks nothing like a tournament face.

This matters more than most archers acknowledge. The visual system uses edge contrast and defined boundaries to locate center. A face with a dozen holes in the yellow has degraded edges, blurred center definition, and a constellation of visual distractors that compete with the X as aim references. An archer who trains primarily on heavily-used faces is training on a stimulus that does not exist in competition. The first arrow of a tournament end — aimed at a pristine face under pressure — is a condition they have rarely practiced.

The offset-sight drill runs thirty arrows through a session and leaves the face untouched. The X is still clean at arrow thirty. The rings still have defined edges. Every shot in the drill is aimed at the same visual stimulus the archer will face in the first end of a tournament — a condition that normal practice cannot replicate without burning through faces at a rate most archers cannot sustain. The ecological validity argument for this drill extends beyond the absence of result feedback. It also includes the presence of a competition-quality aim reference on every single shot.

The training space this fills

Serious practice sessions benefit from several distinct environments, each developing something different. They do not all need to be present in every session.

Full scoring develops performance under pressure and generates real benchmark data. It is the environment with highest pressure and full result feedback — the training condition most similar to competition. Essential. Does not develop intrinsic error-detection on its own.

Blank bailing develops process mechanics with no visual context and no pressure. Useful for isolating form issues, recovering from panic, and learning new technique. Lowest ecological validity. Transfer to competition requires additional bridging.

The offset-sight drill fills the gap between the two. It has the visual context of scoring with none of the result feedback. It trains intrinsic error-detection in the presence of competitive visual stimuli. It is the environment where the shot process is most likely to run as it would in competition — without the contamination that competition results introduce. It is not a replacement for scoring. It is the training condition that makes scored rounds better.

How to use it. One block per practice session, 10–15 arrows. Call every shot before moving. If running a full called 300, record each call and total at the end. Compare to your actual mode score. The gap is actionable data. A called 285 with a real 265 tells you exactly where the work is: not form, not equipment — the process under pressure.

The quality threshold variation — 30 called X shots

The standard drill counts arrows. This variation counts quality shots. The goal is not to shoot 30 arrows — it is to produce 30 shots you would honestly call X. If the shot does not feel like an X, it does not count. You keep going until you have 30 that do.

This sounds like a small change. It is not. The standard drill gives you 30 arrows and whatever quality happens to come with them. The quality threshold variation makes the quality the finish line. You do not get to leave until you have produced 30 shots that met the standard, regardless of how many arrows it takes to get there. A sloppy shot that goes in 40 arrows counts for nothing. A clean shot that goes in arrow 71 counts as one.

The effect on attention is immediate and different from anything else in practice. Every single shot has to be evaluated honestly before the next one begins. Was that an X? Actually an X — not a nine that felt okay, not a ten you are being generous about, but a shot you would have called X if the arrow were going to the face? If not, it does not count and you are still where you were. There is no padding the number with shots that were fine. Fine does not count. X counts.

This also has a clarifying effect on the call itself. Archers who run this variation quickly discover how honest their X standard actually is. If every shot feels like an X, the standard is too low. If almost none do, either the standard is being applied correctly to a process that needs work, or the standard has become perfectionism — which is its own problem. The goal is an honest X: a shot you genuinely believe would have landed in the X-ring, not a perfect shot, not a lucky shot, but a clean process shot called accurately.

How to run it. Set up the drill normally. Set the goal at 30 called-X shots. Any shot you would not call X does not count toward the total — keep going. Do not rush. The point is not to get through it fast; the point is to produce shots that meet the standard. When you have 30 honest X calls, you are done.

Advanced variation: the white paper reveal

The standard drill leaves arrows in bare bale — untracked, irrelevant, the point being that you do not care where they go. Once the drill has served its purpose for mental strength and shot execution, there is a variation that adds a layer of information without compromising the drill's premise.

Pin a blank white piece of paper to the bale above the Vegas face before you start. Shoot the session exactly as normal. The arrows will impact the white paper above instead of bare bale. During the entire session, treat the paper the same way you treat the bare bale — ignore it completely. Do not look at where the arrows are landing. Do not check patterns between shots or between ends. The discipline of the drill depends entirely on your ability to run the shot sequence without processing result information, and the white paper does not change that requirement. If you are looking, you are doing something else.

Only when the session is finished do you examine the paper. What you will find, if the drill was run honestly, is a group. Archers who are mentally strong enough to execute this correctly consistently report that the group is smaller than they expected — often significantly smaller than their scored practice groups. This is not coincidence. When the brain is not managing an outcome, the shot process runs more cleanly. The white paper shows you what your mechanics actually produce when the result pressure is removed. That number — the group size on the white paper — is a meaningful reference point. It is the floor your scored performance should be approaching.

This variation is not for archers who are still using the drill to build mental discipline. Looking at the paper mid-session, or letting awareness of the accumulating pattern influence subsequent shots, collapses the drill back into scored practice with a slightly inconvenient target. The white paper version only works if the shot sequence genuinely runs without result awareness. If there is any doubt about that, run the standard drill until there isn't.

When to use the variation. Once you can shoot a full session into bare bale without caring where the arrows go, add the white paper. Analyze the group after the session, not during. The size of that group tells you what your uncontaminated process produces. Use the gap between that number and your scored mode to understand exactly what result pressure is costing you.
The arrow goes where it goes. The call is what you know. Training the gap between those two is the entire job.
