The air's argument

The air does not want your arrow. It pushes back against every inch of flight, and it pushes back harder against fast things than slow ones. A fast, light arrow is fighting more resistance per yard than a heavy one — which sounds bad for the light arrow, but the payoff is that it gets somewhere quickly before the air can do much about it. The arc stays flat. The drop at distance stays manageable.

That flat arc is the light arrow's entire argument for existing. When you misjudge a distance by five yards — and you will, because everyone does — a flat-shooting arrow forgives you more than a slow one does. At 20 yards the difference is negligible. At 50 yards it is a few inches of vertical. At 70 yards it can be the difference between a clean pass-through and a gut shot, which is a terrible way to end an evening.

So the air votes light. Not because light is better. Because light is faster, and faster means flatter, and flatter means ranging errors hurt less.

The animal's argument

The animal has a different position entirely, and it is not interested in your trajectory math.

When an arrow hits something — hide, rib, shoulder, whatever is between the broadhead and the vitals — it needs to keep moving. The thing that keeps an arrow moving through resistance is momentum. Mass times velocity. A heavier arrow has more of it at the muzzle, loses it more slowly in flight because it is not fighting the air as hard per unit of mass, and arrives at the target with more of it left to spend on the actual problem.

A broadside whitetail at 30 yards is not a hard problem. Hide, one rib, lung, done. Almost any reasonable hunting arrow has enough momentum to make that happen. The animal's argument is quiet in this scenario. You could shoot a moderately light arrow and the deer will not notice the philosophical difference.

An elk quartering away is a different conversation. The arrow has to punch through hide, angle across two or three ribs, possibly clip a shoulder blade, and still have enough left to reach the far lung. That is a lot of work. A light arrow with modest momentum that would have sailed through a broadside whitetail may run out of steam before it reaches anything vital. A heavy arrow with more momentum in reserve keeps going. This is when the animal's argument gets loud.

The rule.The variable is not the animal's weight. It is what the arrow has to get through to reach the vitals. Harder path to the vitals requires more momentum. Easier path and the air's argument starts to matter more.

The negotiation

Neither side wins completely. If you go too light, you have a fast arrow with marginal penetration that punishes you on any shot that is not perfectly broadside and perfectly close. If you go too heavy, you have excellent penetration and a trajectory that drops so much at distance that a ranging error becomes a clean miss or a bad hit.

The sweet spot is wherever the trajectory remains comfortable for your real hunting distances while the momentum remains adequate for the animals you are hunting and the shot angles you are likely to take. That sentence has a lot of variables in it because the answer genuinely depends on all of them.

A hunter who shoots whitetail in thick timber at under 30 yards can afford to run heavier. The trajectory penalty is irrelevant at that range, and the momentum benefit is real even if it is rarely tested. A hunter who shoots open-country mule deer out to 60 yards needs to balance the drop math more carefully. A hunter who goes after elk in dark timber at 40 yards and sometimes gets a quartering shot — that hunter should be on the heavier end and should not apologize for it.

Run as heavy an arrow as your trajectory will allow for your real hunting distances. When the drop makes you uncomfortable at the ranges you actually shoot, back off. That is the entire decision.

Stop thinking about kinetic energy

Kinetic energy is printed on bow spec sheets because manufacturers discovered that fast, light arrows produce large KE numbers, and large numbers sell bows. A 300-grain arrow at 310 fps looks more impressive than a 500-grain arrow at 240 fps if you only read the KE column. Nobody prints momentum numbers. This is not an accident.

KE is not what drives an arrow through an animal. Momentum is. The archery industry spent twenty years pointing hunters at the wrong number, forums spent twenty years arguing about it, and the foam block at the range continued not caring either way. Stop reading the KE column. It is not your friend.

The heavy arrow has more momentum, loses it more slowly, and hits harder on anything that requires actual work to get through. The light arrow has a flatter arc. Pick accordingly.
