If you can shoot a 295, you are a 300 shooter. You just don't know it yet.
That is not encouragement. It is a mechanical claim. The physical ability to shoot a 300 is present in every archer who shoots a 295. The shot is built. The form is there. The equipment is matched. Whatever you need to produce a 10 — you already have it, because you are already producing 10s. What you are not producing yet is thirty of them in a single round.
The gap between 295 and 300 is five arrows — five shots in thirty that did not reach their full potential. On a Vegas face those are nines. Sometimes a marginal 10 that found the line. The archer who shot 295 shot the same arrows as the archer who shot 300 for most of the round. Then something happened — or more precisely, something stopped happening.
The difference is attention. And the research on what that actually means for precision is more specific than most archers realize.
What attention does to precision — the science
Archery is a precision motor task. So is surgery, marksmanship, and controlled demolition. What these share is a requirement for fine motor output that produces a specific, repeatable result within a narrow tolerance window. In archery that window is a 40mm ring at 20 yards.
Research on precision motor tasks consistently shows that attention is not a passive variable — it is an active input. When attentional resources are full and correctly directed, precision improves. When they are reduced, diverted, or absent, precision degrades. This is not a soft psychological claim. It is a neurological one.

In archery the terminal phase is the aiming and execution window: from settling at full draw through the shot. It is precisely the moment when experienced shooters are most likely to assume their automation can handle it. The research says that is exactly when full attention matters most.
The finding that matters most: Dividing attention during a precision motor task degrades output proportionally — not as a threshold, but as a gradient. Every unit of attention pulled away from the shot is costing precision. The 295 shooter's five missing arrows are not random. They are the arrows where attention left the building.
The constrained action problem — why autopilot is not neutral
Motor learning researcher Gabriele Wulf identified a phenomenon called the constrained action hypothesis. It explains what happens when an experienced performer turns their conscious attention toward their own mechanics during execution — and why that makes performance worse, not better.
Common sense says an expert paying close attention to their own form should produce better output than one running on autopilot. In practice, the opposite is true. When a skilled performer directs attention internally — monitoring their grip, their release timing, their draw arm position mid-shot — they activate a constrained action mode. Conscious monitoring interferes with the automatic processes that produce the movement. The result is degraded precision from a shooter who was trying harder than usual.
The correct alternative is not autopilot. It is external focus. Directing attention to the outcome — the target, the ring, the dot settling where it needs to settle — allows the automatic motor system to execute without interference. Archery-specific research has confirmed this in both recreational and elite populations: an external focus of attention enhances shot precision and, more significantly, modulates motor pathway excitability itself. The nervous system runs more efficiently when attention is directed outward at the task rather than inward at the body performing it.
This is the attention quality that matters for the 295-to-300 transition. The question is not only whether you are paying attention — it is whether attention is pointed at the right level of the task. Full conscious presence in the aiming process, directed externally at execution rather than internally at mechanics, is what produces consistent precision. Autopilot and over-monitoring are both failure modes. The first removes attention. The second misdirects it.
Where 295 shooters lose their arrows
If you are a 295 shooter, think carefully about your misses. Not where they landed — but why they happened. Were you fully present through that aiming process? Or did the shot just kind of happen?
There is a specific quality of experience that separates the two. A shot where you were fully present has a beginning, a middle, and an end — you tracked the settle, you were in the aiming window, you felt the conditions align, and you executed. A shot that "just happened" has a gap somewhere in that sequence. You were at full draw and then the trigger broke and you are not entirely certain what occurred in between. The shot ran itself.
Experienced archers operate on autopilot more than they recognize. This is not a character flaw — it is a consequence of competence. Highly ingrained skills are precisely those the brain is most willing to hand to automated processing. The shot you have fired twelve thousand times is exactly the shot your brain is most confident does not require conscious supervision. And for most of a 295 round, it may be right. The problem is the five arrows where the automatic system makes a small error that full presence would have caught — or prevented, because complete attention changes the execution of the shot, not just the monitoring of it.
The drift happens in predictable places. The "easy" arrows — short distance, clean conditions, no pressure — where the stakes feel low enough that presence seems unnecessary. The shots immediately after a great end, when confidence is high and the brain decides it has earned the right to coast. The late-round arrows, between shots 20 and 27, when cognitive fatigue has accumulated and sustaining full attention requires more effort than it did at arrow one. These are not mechanical failures. They are attention failures at the exact moments when full attention was most available to be borrowed.
What 100% attention actually looks like
Full attention is not white-knuckling. It is not consciously auditing every component of your form. It is not heightened anxiety or manufactured intensity. Those are all forms of misplaced attention — directed inward at your mechanics rather than outward at execution. Research on shooting performance under heightened arousal shows consistently that over-arousal degrades the same automatic processes that inattention does, just through a different mechanism.
What 100% attention looks like in the aiming window is simpler and harder than most archers expect: complete presence in what is happening right now. The pin is on the target. You know it. You are watching it settle. You are aware of the hold, the back load, the moment when conditions are correct — and when they are correct, you execute. No gap. No drift. No moment where you handed the shot to the automatic system and stepped away.
Researchers at Frontiers in Psychology, studying the relationship between mindfulness training and shooting accuracy, found that a four-week mindfulness-based intervention significantly improved archers' scores and produced measurable changes in EEG oscillations during the shot — meaning the attentional quality of execution changed at the neural level, not just the behavioral one. What mindfulness training builds, in this context, is not a meditation habit. It is the ability to sustain present-moment attention on a specific object without drift. Applied to archery, that object is the execution of this arrow, now. Not the last one. Not the score. This one.
Autopilot — 295 mode
The shot runs itself. Presence is intermittent. The aiming window has a gap where attention went somewhere else. You register the result but could not fully reconstruct what happened between full draw and the trigger break. Some of these shots are 10s — automation is not always wrong. The ones that are nines are hard to diagnose, because you were not there to read them.
Full presence — 300 mode
Every arrow has a complete experience: settle, hold, the moment conditions are right, execution. You were there for the shot. You can read the result against what you felt. Misses are informative, not mysterious. The round is thirty distinct executions, not a blur of form run on repeat. The attention is not anxious — it is present. There is a meaningful difference between those two states.
The prescription — how to train it
The gap between 295 and 300 is an attention problem. That means it has an attention solution, and the solution is not inspiration or willpower. It is practice — the same way form is practice.
Track presence alongside score. After each end in a practice round, ask one question: was I present for every shot? Not whether the shots were good — whether you were there. Score the end on presence: full (present for all three), partial (drifted on one), absent (two or more ran on autopilot). Log that alongside your arrow score. Over several sessions the correlation becomes visible. Low-presence ends produce scattered nines. High-presence ends produce tight 10s. The data is in the log; the log is the feedback.
Use your pre-shot routine as an attention anchor. The pre-shot routine is not just a mechanical checklist. It is an attention reset — a deliberate procedure that returns you to the present moment before each shot. An archer whose routine includes a specific cue to arrive — a breath, a physical check, a deliberate pause before the bow comes up — is building an attention habit, not just a shot habit. The routine delivers you to the aiming window in the right state. What you do with the window from there is the variable.
Practice presence before you practice performance. Shoot a blank bale or close-distance session where the only metric is attention quality. No score. One arrow at a time. Full presence through execution. If you drift mid-shot, lower the bow and start over. This is uncomfortable in a way that scored practice is not, because there is no number to hide behind — just you and whether you showed up for the arrow. Done regularly, this builds the attention muscle the same way form work builds the physical one.
Target your specific drift pattern. If you lose presence on easy shots, make a rule: there is no such thing as an easy shot. If you drift late in the round, treat arrows 20–30 as the most important arrows in practice, not the cleanup. If you coast after a great end, make the reset after a strong end as deliberate as the reset after a bad one. The drift pattern is specific to you. So is the fix.
The 300 round you are capable of does not require a different bow arm, a better release, or tighter groups than you already produce. It requires that you were actually present for the five arrows where you currently were not. Show up for thirty arrows. That is the whole game.
